| Replaced the rubber boot/seal at clutch arm, went for a test run and gearbox oil was running from somewhere on top of the gearbox and onto the exhaust. Not a nice smell! Any ideas were the oil is leaking from would be much appreciated. (96 K1100LT) |

My 1st statement would be:
Welcome to K11.
2ndly, how full do you have the gear box. There is a vent on the top-left side. Kind of back behind the ign coils.
At normal oil levels it doesn't leak out of there.
I suppose if you had it super overfull it could leak out there. _________________ Ride safe.

| Thank you for the welocome & response. I made a DIY oil level dipstick from a welding rod with 116mm & 126mm marked on it. Got measurements from internet. I think there is a fair chance I have over filled it. |

Good morning Gerard...
First.... WELCOME to the K11OG group !! I hope you will become a regular visitor and contributor ! Would love to see pics of your rides around the homeland !
Secondly... do you have a proper "fill gage" in your tool roll ? You use this little "L" shaped gage by placing it vertically in the fill opening and allowing the 'horizontal' portion to lie flat on the rim of the fill opening. When withdrawn, the mark will show whether your tranny fluid is high or low. Do NOT exceed that level !! If you do not have a gage, we can supply you with a drawing to make your own.
Thirdly.... Do you have a Service Manual ? If not, there is a free copy on line which you can download and selectively print at your leisure. We can supply you with the link, as well as many more helpful links to assist you.

Hi Gerard...
OK... For a free download on the service manual:

Second:.... If you have a pencil and paper.. Draw the letter "L" inverted havin a line thickness of appx .25".... Make the horizontal portion of the "L" a stubby 1" in length. From the lowest level of the horizontal stub, come down 116mm ( 4.57 inches ) and make a mark ( this will be the HIGH fluid mark ) Then come down another 10mm ( 0.39 inches ) and make a second mark ( this will be the LOW level mark ) Extend below the LOW level mark another 15mm and mark this as your Cut Off level when making the tool..
When using the tool, insert it vertically into the 'fill opening' and allow the stub to rest on the rim of the 'fill opening'... when you withdraw the tool you will see whether the fluid level is HIGH or LOW.. After making you tool ( from either Alu or SSTL or plastic for that matter ) store it in you tool roll for future use as you ride.

I explains why I had an oil leak, I measured from the bottom of the rod and not from the top! Lesson learnt. Thanks for the Link. Will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

Made my gearbox gauge from an aluminum rod. I used an old screwdriver handle and jammed in a piece of square aluminum rod cut to the proper length. Marked the maximum fill line into the rod with a triangle file.
P.S. @ERnie-NH: Love the paper gauge idea. Wish I thought of that myself. _________________ - Robert
