In an attempt to eliminate two intermittent faults (1) in the windscreen operation and (2) a recent engine 'dying' on the road - which 'came right' after being shifted home on the back of a truck, I plan to clean every connection I can find. Both windscreen relays appear to operate ('clicking' can be heard, and windscreen operates sometimes).
Can anyone tell me how to pull connectors apart for cleaning. I see that the wires into the connectors have terminals crimped on to them, but cannot see how the terminals are attached to the back of the male pins, nor how the male pins/female sockets are secured into the body of the connector Can you enlighten me please?
What cleaning can be done to relays in the box under the seat? The bike lives outside under a cover. Our weather is warm & humid much of the time. _________________ 1997 K1100LT ex police

Hi Bryan - welcome to K11OG!
Are you specifically talking about the windscreen connectors? They should pull off.
I've not had to do anything with the relays, but I clean all the connectors I can easily access every spring. Use CorrosionX or Deoxit, or something similar, then apply silicone grease or petroleum jelly to keep water/moisture out of the connectors.
The sidestand switch is a likely culprit for dying on the road - also the connector behind the right side cover for the gas tank/fuel pump. _________________ Jim

As far as your intermittent windscreen operation, make sure your rails and guides are clean and lubricated. I do mine at least 1-2 times a riding season. Even then I still have to help it sometimes so it stays even when moving. _________________ Ride safe.

Many thanks for your comments, guys. A local BMW rider came up with the following URL which is likely to be the answer to my query about pulling connectors apart: http://users.rcn.com/dehager/service/oilhead_hall_sensors.pdf
Perhaps this might be of help to others. Cheers, from wet, humid Auckland,NZ _________________ 1997 K1100LT ex police

You sure you don't have something broken in there, Scott? _________________ Jim

Truth be told Jim, I think the motor driven gear that physically touches the cables is worn, so the cables will slip/jump. That's why I have to help it sometimes.
I've cleaned and lubed the tubes, slider rails, and the hinge points. They work best right while I'm lubing them and they are still wet with silicone lube.
The '97 is better than the '95, but it also has a bigger screen too.
I pretty much have them set and don't change them much anyway _________________ Ride safe.

I think this problem solved! In a methodical cleaning of as many connectors I could find, I found one (aft of the tank connector on RHS) where the wire was adrift. Connect - presto! Disconnect - nothing!
This 2-pin connector has a G/Y coming out of one pin and looping back into the adjacent pin. As a previous owner was the NZ Police Dept. I assume perhaps this strange? electrical configuration may be related to the fact that there is no evidence of a side stand switch which the Police may have removed. Anyway, there are now no problems with either the windscreen or the engine operation. Many thanks for all your comments. regards to you all. _________________ 1997 K1100LT ex police
