Hi, I am new at this Forum. I live in Reykjavik, Iceland and own a BMW K75RT which I just love.

I have been offered a 1994, K1100RS with 20.000 miles on the clock. It was imported from USA. It looks and runs great. It was damaged around ten years ago, it was cosmetic damage only, and the whole faring was bought new and replaced. I know the guy who did it and remember when this happened. He bought new BMW panniers at the time to. It has alway´s been kept inside. It has seen very little use for the last ten years and I´m sure that it has not being serviced properly for the same period of time. Approx. how much would you have to pay for a bike like this in the States?

That sounds a lot like my bike's story when I got it. A parking lot bump over that cracked up some of the fairing, which was all fixed or repaired and repainted and now you can't tell.

When I bought mine almost 8 years ago, my '93 had 41k on it and needed some TLC servicing ($1,500 worth at the dealer incl. spline lube.) They were asking $5,200 and I offered $3,500 based on what service it needed and they accepted.

Yours has low miles, but might need some work to freshen it up. They don't like to sit for extended periods. Mine sat for 8 months in a used bike shop and was not running well at all at first.

I'd guess a bike like that here in the US might get $3,250-$4,000 depending on condition. It'll probably need a spline lube at this age, even though the mileage isn't at the 40k mark. I doubt one was ever done.

If your willing to get it, go through it and change every fluid there is and get a good fresh battery. These K's are very fussy about low batteries and you'll get all kinds of ABS faults and other weird things. Save yourself a lot of aggravation and get a good, modern sealed battery. Oddesy makes a good one.

Some of the electrical connections can also be problematic if they are getting dirty inside and not making good contact, or if any wires come loose, especially ground ones. A thorough going over every connection you can find and clean and lube with a suitable grease.

Hi Steve. Thanks for your story and advise. As it happens I enjoy servicing and overhauling my bikes over the winter months as well as riding them hard from spring from autumn. I agree the battery is number one, number two is all fluids new and a spline lube. This is a must with all older BMW´s I´ve herd there is a chain on the new S bikes, A CHAIN, yakkkkk

You've got a head start already owning a K75, it's much the same, just four instead of three.

I'll bet you guys have some incredible scenery to ride in there, the documentaries I've seen make some of it look like it's on another planet.

Yes we have fantastic scenery, but it can be tough to ride here because of the ever changing weather. It´s always possible to put on clothes to protect you from rain and cold, but sometimes we get very heavy wind and then you must be very careful. The chance is, if you go for a MC trip for 10 days here, you will get all kinds of weather . However I must say that for the last summers I have gone for long trips and always been extremely lucky with the weather.

I recently acquired mine from a friend who had owned it for 9 years and travelled only 2,000 kms. It had not been started in well over a year when I took delivery. The biggest problem was the fuel tank and the damage done by the stale fuel. The amount of growing rust on the fuel tank sender unit and the fuel pump mount was amazing. I went to great lengths to dismantle and clean the fuel tank and buy all new parts for inside. I used some of that CT 20 (I think) aluminium cleaner to move the yellow crud in the fuel tank and finished off with a pressure cleaner. After the tank was looking pristine a friend said, what's that in the bottom corner? Turns out the aluminium tank was corroded through in 2 place at the bottom when rust from the other components had congregated. The 2 holes were easily repaired by a tank repairer and he hardly damaged the paint during the welding.
It is now running fine, thanks in part to help from this site.
I am sure you will change all the fluids especially the brake fluid and coolant. Ian

Wow, there must have been water in there! The metal in the fuel pump must have rusted first and damaged the aluminium. When I got my K75RT (model 1990) everything in the tank looked great, and has given me no problems what so ever. I have herd that the rubber parts in the tank can go to pieces when they age and do some damage.

Not sure at the moment about BSFOS. I start a new (part-time) job the beginning of February. I'm not sure of my hours / roster yet. hoping to get to the Karuah River Rally at Dungog on Feb 10 (Have 10, 11, 12 Feb definitely off atm).

Themason over at the Flying Brick Forum made the following observation:

"Were it mine I'd put the K-100 intake snorkel on it and use the slimmer and lighter K-100RS fairing lower panels on the bike, and K-10016V foot peg plates, all to lighten it up. I find the 1100 fairing to be a bit too bulky for my taste and love the lines of the original RS fairing".

I somewhat agree with Themason. Does the lower part of the K100 fairing fit straight on to the K1100? Is the upper part the same?

If I haven't already said it.....WELCOME.

I had a '93 K1100RS and now have a '92 K100RS- so I have had some RS brick maintenance experience.





After looking at your pictures my first impression is that it probably spent some time living outside uncovered- bits of corrosion/rust in various spots. That and the bodywork needing some rubbing to bring back the shine.

Just off the top of my head.....

-I would want to check inside the bottom of the fairing for any fluid leaks, mostly due to age and lack of use.

-Any visible cracks where the 4 header pipes join the muffler assembly?

-Look inside the fuel tank (a better view if you open the cap and remove the 4 Philips screws then the cap assembly). Do you see lots of rust or sediment/varnish?

-Stiff brake controls? Master cylinder leaks? Pull a couple of electrical connectors apart- any big corrosion?

Just thinking of the more common items. Others will add their input- I have probably missed a bunch.

Other than something unlikely but unseen, from the pictures it looks pretty good, a machine that with some "elbow grease" and time should be a solid runner.
As you know from the K75, you have to work very hard to kill a K bike.

Hi John & Cathy

After my first look at the bike I have to agree with you. It has been somewhere, maybe outside, maybe inside in a unheated shed or something. I have a lot of experience in repairing, rebuilding and restoring all kinds of motorcycles and my opinion is that this bike has to be stripped down and given a complete overhaul before it can be trusted and used as I use motorcycles.

Your white K100RS is fantastic, a beautiful bike. How many miles do you have on it?
