| Can the trany and everything aft be pulled off together in one piece? Got gear shifter shaft issues. Lots of slack in gear shifter |

Moondog,
Sure can.....(my old '93 RS) I used an old furniture dolly and shimmed up under the FD/swingarm/trans. Then rolled the whole assembly back.

OH
Is there any alignment tools needed or any special tools going back on?
Its easy to come apart, it's going back in that's the big issue |

No alignment tools needed if you aren't going to take the clutch assembly apart.
Not as difficult as it might seem. But to make it easier I had shimmed under the removed trans assembly so I just wheeled it back and slid it in. _________________ John & Cathy

You should be fine if you don't remove, or take apart the clutch assy.
You may have to put the trans in gear to be able to rotate the input shaft when putting back, but that should be about it. _________________ Ride safe.

| Now to find the time to do it. Might have to move soon so don't want to have it ripped apart and trying to load it on the truck. |

It may help to make up some gearbox guide pins. These are put in place of a couple of the bell housing bolts, and can aid alignment, and help to support the box.
On my R1150RT, as I was working alone, I used a trolley jack to support the unit while pushing it home.

here's my home made guide pins. M8x 1.25 bolts. Cut the heads off and you can cut a slot on the end for a screw driver if you like. Thanks to Scott for the idea.

Ok, found the grub screw (or set screw is what everyone in the real world call it) about 3/4 backed out. I sense this has been loose for some time only not to this degree. I shifter always had a little slop in it so it must have stayed put for awhile before loosening some more. Haven't looked at the manual yet but I assume some loctite and a little torque will be involved. For anyone who has dealt with this, what position do I put the shaft in before I snug it down. Is there a detent the set screw sets in or what?

Hello!
Use strong loctite on that little sucker and give a good cleaning to threads. If You are then You can take a closer look to gear box seals. And check the gearbox breather - it might be a lot of dust under the plastic cap.

Hello!
I am using high quality RTV silicon (liquid gasket). I prefer Permatex made in USA - yep one can buy it here in Poland!.
