| Hi there, does anybody know if there is a way to 'clean' the ignition contacts on a 1992 K1100lt. I have seen the post about removing and cleaning the contacts on the K75 ignition, however the ignition is not the same on the K1100. What seems to happen is that sometimes whilst riding along, the bike will cut out temporarily. If I fiddle with the ignition key, it will all light up again, this is fine but I can only see this situation getting worse. I have sprayed some WD40 type cleaner into the barrel with limited success, any help would be appreciated, cheers eddy1a. |

At the right side of the ignition switch you find a real tiny grub screw covered with red paint,
(beware a million owners have lost this one during dismantling).
After loosening this screw a few turns.....and lost it, you can remove the switch part.
Internals is close to similar as on the 2V`s.

Not always the switch, tis quite common that the cables to the switch fracture with use inside the insulation, I have owned 3 K11's & had to repair the cables on two of them. To check them give them a tug, if they stretch change them.

| Ok, so, I removed the grub screw that was mentioned above, and tried to take out the plastic bottom section of the ignition, but it doesn't seem to want to come out, at least not without possibly breaking something. I then tried to gain better access by removing the complete ignition. I removed the shear bolts so that the ignition is loose, but can't seem to remove it. Am I missing something ? |

After the grub screw have been removed, you should be able to pull the switch part straight down from the housing.

| Hi, thanks for your reply. I managed to remove the complete ignition after loosening off the fairing/instrument support on the front fork bridge. After looking at the ignition off the bike, I discovered that someone had previously tried to remove the bottom of the ignition but had only succeeded in loosening it. As a result, they had glued it back in place which is why it wouldn't come out after removal of the grub screw. Anyway, I stripped it down cleaned it all up lightly greased the contacts inside and reinstalled it. It seems 100% better than before, so fingers crossed. Thanks again. |
