I am having problems with my ABS. I believe it started with a low battery.

Currently, the lights are flashing at the same time. From what I can gather here, it just needs a reset. If the lights flash alternately there is a fault, is this correct?

I have tried resetting the ABS using the 3 prong plug on left side of my bike. I have tried it holding the ABS button down before turning the key on. I have tried holding the ABS button down after turning the key. I have done each way a number of times. It has not reset the ABS light.

Do I have a fault? If I pull the ABS harness how do I know the numbering of the pins? Should I buy a fault code unit?

Any suggestions, ideas would be appreciated.

BTW, while a bit dated (so are our bikes, right?) ibmwr is a good source for BMW bike info.

Good luck. These ABS systems can drive you nuts for a while then behave themselves for days, weeks or years. I have had mine show a fault that I could not clear then reset itself without my help.

OK, Update on the ABS issue on the '93KLT.

Try as I might, I could not reset the system: Hold ABS button down turn on ignition; turn ignition on hold button down; dance around naked with a candle up my ass holding the button down grounding the test plug with the metal candle wick....nothing worked.

Broke down and took it to the dealer. Initial report is that the ABS brain is dead. Saturday service guy says the brain is not communicating with the system. Regular service guy will be in on Monday to give me the final say. A new brain is $2300US. Ouch. My brain isn't worth that much (joke intended).

If the initial information is correct, do I need an ABS rebuild? Has anyone used the guy in Japan? I understand there is a company on the east coast doing this. Are they doing ABS 1?

Any other ideas you may have please shoot them my way.

Well, try as I might, I could not reset the ABS light. Took the bike to the dealer. They could not get the Hella ABS unit to communicate through the port. Didn't charge me either . Smile

Off it goes to Japan today. Tosi has written that he believes he can resuscitate my unit. It takes 5-7 days to get there. I am looking forward to having ABS again.

There is a company in Germany that also fixes ABS1 Hella units. They will not accept units from North America. I suspect it has to do with our being a litigious society. I did ask if I did send it to someone in Europe to send it to them, would they fix it? Their response was that as long as it came from a European address that was fine. There costs were much higher than Tosi's.

Info: Tosi is also working to become able to repair the ABS-ll "brain". I hope he comes up with a methodology soon, I for one would like my ABS back and functional. IF he can do it, his prices will be more than fair.

Hi All,

My 1992 K1100 LT ABS! was experiencing a error code 2. This is what I did:

1. Reset the ABS - no luck
2. Did the full wiring /cleaning check as per the k forum on ibmwr.org, still not luck
3. eBayed a used rear modulator, the unit tested good, replaced the original unit, still no luck.
4. Sent the ABS control unit over to Tosi in Japan. Quick turnaround, and he kept me informed. 15000 Yen or about 190 dollars.
5. Reinstalled the ABS brain, and no flashing lights!

Great service from Toshi. I would highly recommend him.

The unit went to Japan. Tosi had it for about a week. The unit came back today. It was installed and works perfectly.

Tosi replaced several transistors and installed it in his bike to make sure it turned off his ABS light.

The total cost with shipping to and fro was about $235. Best money I ever spent on the bike. A new one is $2200 from a dealer. I just got back from a 1700 mile trip without ABS. Not sure why I was self-conscious about it but I was.

I was kept abreast of the errors and diagnostics on the unit at every step. I highly recommend him for anyone having ABS1 issues.
