Thanks all. (Mike d, couldn't fiddle it, must be another kind of battery box.) I did manage to work under the loosened battery box, didn't have to break open the rear brake line. Then past the coil space.
FYI the hot-lead, insulated one, needs the ridge, the shelf thing, turned to the bottom (placed to the side toward the end) of the starter.
Else it will hit the brush plate and not fit so well.
Looks like a backward "L" in this pix.
That small chip on the lower left is my 'shim', works for a temporary fix.
Brushes about 0.24 inch will be too short, the other at about 0.3 inch was just barely working.
