|
|
Has anyone ever had this problem, it might only be a Canadian thing but I purchase a 93 K1100LT and was told (after I brought it home) that because the serial number is not 17 numbers and characters long, in my bikes case it only has 7 numbers no letters.
My insurance company will not insure it because according to them in 1981 the International Body of VIN numbers said all Vehicles after that date would need to have the longer VIN number but my BMW although it was imported in 08 has only 7 numbers, has anyone had that problem before, over the years I have never heard of this before.
I have checked the web and when I put the serial number in one site it said if was a K1100LT manufactured in Germany.
I looks like it might be a good thing to know, as if I can't get insurance on it, I guess is a parts bike.
Does anyone in Canada with K1100LT have a 7 digit number on their bike, and have it insured , just curious. _________________ 2003 R1150 GSA

actually it does. The problem lies with the insurance company. It is not a parts bike or a stolen bike. Obviously we Europeans have a more sophisticated insurance data base than the colonials lol _________________ slyderx

Had a similar issue, you can actually generate back the VIN from the 7 digits serial number.
Here is how to decode the VIN: http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/IDnumbrs.htm
For a K1100LT, it starts by WB105360, then a check digit, then for a 93 model the letter P, then your 7 digits.
If you are not sure about the year model, check here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do
You can then check the VIN from http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vinDecoder.asp
I can generate the check digit for you if you want, just PM me the serial number. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

I just posted to your other thread and referenced a GTAM thread that could help. Then, reading this one I see that Inge K. pointed you to my K100RTforum thread. Now, it appears you solved your problem; I guess that means you found an insurance agent who was willing to accept your VIN. Congrats. _________________ - Robert

Yes; I was successful, I found a Broker that was also a Biker and has seen this problem before, matter of fact he just laughed at the whole issue.
I appreciate the help from all the members.
