I just purchase a really nice 93 K1100LT.

And have been calling around trying to get insurance on it, but it only has a seven digit serial number 0182XXX and not one insurance company will take it without a 17 digit Vin number. Has anyone had this problem??

Be interested in knowing and if you were able to get it insured with whom.

The Ministry of Transportation tells me it is a valid serial properly imported from Germany back a few years ago and has had two owner in Canada.

Didn't Number 6 help you with this?

Yes, but I guess the question is more to know if he shouldn't have the right to insure it with the 7 digits frame number.

Yes, Number 6 did help me with figuring out what the 17 Digit Number would be, but after talking to three insurance copies they still hang their hats on the fact that the serial number on the Bike is 7 digits and on the Ontario Ownership as well in 7 digits. The insurance companies want a copy of the ownership and it would not match the 17 digit number 6 gave me.

The frame has only 7 digits on it and so does the plate.

So my question really, does anyone else have a 7 Digit Serial number in Ontario and if so who insured it. (I just might be calling the wrong companies)

So if 2 others have owned it up there, can you contact them(the previous owners) to find what insurance co they used?

I agree with Scott about contacting the former owners.

But I am still somewhat confused about your VIN. I happen to own a Canadian 1992 K100RS (the speedometer and odometer are metric only) and the frame sticker has approval from Canada, not the USA.

I do live in the US and have had no problem with registration, but it has the "correct" 17 digit VIN.

Was yours originally registered in Germany?

If it is formerly German registered or not, if you cannot contact the previous owners might you contact BMW in Germany for further documentation?

This is kinda' strange.....

Good luck.
John

I have had exactly the problem you have and solved it by getting insurance with companies who handle vintage bikes. My K100RT has a non-conformant VIN having been imported from Germany as well. Very recent changes to the insurance industry prevent companies from insuring the bike because it cannot be registered in their systems. The two choices you have are Jevco and State Farm. I did get insurance with Trafalgar once but I don't know if they have been recently hit with the changes. Get in touch with John Duffy Insurance Brokers http://www.johnduffyinsurance.com/ who are experts with this. Also read this GTAM thread for lots of information about this problem.

Hope this helps.

Well, I got the problem fixed.

The moral of this story is when you are shopping for insurance, go to a broker that is a Rider as well. I wasn't in his office more that 10 minutes and I was walking out insured.

The Ontario Transport said there was no problem with 7 numbers but three different insurance company employee's need to file in those 17 spaces before they issue a policy.

Thank you all for your help, but this was a lesson learned, check and make sure you can cross all T's before you lay down the money.

Look forward to my first street ride over the weekend on my new old bike.
