Is it possible to lose engine oil through the trany or would that show up in the seep hole on bottom of transmission?
I have no seepage at the weep hole. Just trying to figure out where the oil is going. The spark plugs are bone dry and tan in color so I am not burning it.
There is no external leakage e.g - valve cover or crankshaft cover. There is some oil around the oil filler port but no path of oil back so I assume it is not a lot of oil.

Clean it and try to find out where it comes from. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

How much oil are you loosing.
It's not unheard of to burn 3/4 of a quart per 1000 miles.
Sometimes even the oil can hide in the engine.
I can be at one gas stop and the oil will be at the bottom of the sight glass, yet at the next stop the glass can be 3/4 full. Can't explain it, but I have seen it, as well as others have experienced it too.
As far as engine oil migrating to the engine, very unlikely if not impossible. For it to get from the engine to the transmission it would have to travel thru the clutch, long before which your clutch would have been flinging the oil around the inside of the bell-housing and then leaking out the bottom weep hole. _________________ Ride safe.

I agree with Scott about the hiding oil phenomenon. Have seen it myself.
And my previous K-RS would burn more than a quart in 1000 miles under some warmer conditions.
What does your coolant look like?
Is there any oil on the outside of the engine where the headers bolt to the cylinder head?
You haven't serviced your oil/water pump recently, have you? _________________ John & Cathy

Don't really know because I haven't been measuring but 3/4 of a quart may be right. Just seems to be more than I use to use. Guess I better start measuring. What is the quanity added from the bottom of the sight glass to the center dot in the sight glass? I read it some where but I can't find it again |

I'm thinking around 1/2 quart. When I'm home I pour out of a 5 quart bottle, and I don't think too much about it on the road...... _________________ Ride safe.

You are correct. I found in the rider's handbook, from minimum level (bottom of red circle on sight glass to top of circle) is 1.05 pints or a 1/2 quart. Now once I get this shifter issue fixed and get it back on the road, I am going to carry a pint container and see what I am burning. I don't think I am burning as much as I think I am. |
