I have now become the proud owner of my 2nd K11 LT after my last one was hopelessly written off in an accident. Its on a 99 V plate so one of the last, and also was a Police bike until 2007 so should have had a good start in life.
Couple of niggles if I may pick some brains please.
I dont know if anyones experienced on a carburetter engine a hissing noise followed by a slight pop & a misfire when a needle is blocked? but ive got the same sympton on the K11 which we all know is fuel injected. At the moment i'm putting it down to a dirty fuel system so will try some injecter cleaner in the morning because the bike has been stood for 3 years, but failing that what else could it be? Leaky maifold perhaps?
There is a little black smoke on the overun, again points to a fuel issue but can't be sure. If it is the in let valves then its catchable cos theres lots of compression.
Are the valve clearances adjustable on K11's or are the bucket & shim? never had the head off one so don't know.
The bike goes like stink, much better than the old one so i'm confident of no major engine woe's, no burnt oil or blue smoke. (unless its been left on the side stand) But there is a slight knock on the idle, my old one used to do it under load, maybe just a characteristic of the engine?
Finally the tyres, Maxxis Proma XX Street, never heard of them before, Brand new. But noticed today they have MADE IN TAIWAN on the walls. Any cause for concern? Always been a Bridgestone man meself.
Cheers

Valve clearances are bucket & Shim. There is a special tool to hold the cams in place, some just do it with a screwdriver.
As for popping, hissing & fartin, because it's stood I would change the fuel filter. Do the cheapest, easiest things first. Check also the TPS setting, look in the stickies for that one.
Maxxis tyres (tires) seem to be well received, but probably not for those who ride on the limit. Remember when we used to worry about Japanese tyres.

Cheers Tim
Yes I do remember Jap rubber very well which was why I question tyres made in the far east, they seem ok but I haven't tried them in the wet yet.
Fuel filter sounds like a plan.
Had a funny feeling valves would be bucket and shim, shame really co's they are so easy to get at would be a piece of cake if old style tappets.
For now i'm putting the chuffs of black smoke down to old fuel in the system or even a corroded valve, will see if the magic of Redex sorts things out, the bikes done 66000 miles, most of them by the Police so i'll see how it settles down with regular use..
Pardon me for being ignorant but whats a TPS setting? _________________ K11 LT |

You will need a mutimeter & 10 minutes. _________________ Regards Tim,

You need a good throttle sync. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

I'd agree with that having gone down the Alternator "Monkey Nuts" rubber replacement route to no avail - All it needed was to synch the throttles which were as it turned out in great need of it!
Hope that helps
Best regards,

David......WELCOME!
Chris,
The valves are fairly easy to adjust after you have done it once- the first time is a bit nerve-wracking. Be sure to work slowly, make lots of notes, take many pictures and ask here.
I used "zip ties" to secure the timing chain to the engine and camshaft sprockets to the timing chain- that avoids reassembly errors.
(Thanks for the tip, Scott!)

Not entirely true for the 4V engines.
There are no shims on these engines. The only way to adjust the valve clearance is to measure/replace the bucket, and to do that you have to remove the cam. It's not recommended to reuse a used bucket, I have done it and the engine hasn't blown up yet......But it's advised to order the new size you may need.
It's not as easy as the 2V engines that use the shims(used ones can be reused), but is still doable at home. _________________ Ride safe.

I also reused shim/buckets. Shuffled 2 to different valves and bought 2 new ones.
I haven't blown up either- got me through last year just fine _________________ John & Cathy

You can reuse the buckets as much as you want, they don't wear out, just don't drop them. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.
