Hello all,

My name is Tyler and I've been lurking/reading on here for a while. I just wanted to introduce myself as have pretty much decided my next bike will be a K1100RS. It just seems like a lot of bike for the money. I have several Bimmers, but this will be my first Beamer. I imagine I'll be spending a lot of time on here if I make a purchase.

I was hoping to get some help with valuation of the bike in looking at. I'll be doing a partial trade, but an accurate value is still important. Here is the description of the bike.

Quote:
1995 K1100RS (25K miles). The K1100RS just had a full service in September, just before a trip to Asheville and back on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It has heated grips, Throttlemeister cruise control, Corbin Dual Canyon seat, side cases and factory quick-attach 22L top case.  I have liners (soft luggage) for all three cases.  Factory tank bag in fair condition.  Stainless-steel hardware kit.

The bike is graphite and I would expect it to be in great condition. I know the guy selling it and have dealt with him before.

I appreciate any help you guys can provide and look forward to reading more here and hopefully some rides! I'm already familiar with Hungry Mother as we spent a week there for a family reunion every year from when I was 2 to 22 or so. Love that place. Very Happy

Tyler-

Great!! Another member with a K-RS.

Good luck with your transaction.

If possible, post some pictures and particulars. Also you have some K11OG members there in Va. that could be some help.

John

Hi Tyler,

Welcome to K11OG!

Kelley Blue Book puts the value of that bike at $2620.00 trade in, and $3700.00 retail at a dealer. SE versions are somewhat higher. Private sale usually falls somewhere between the two.

In addition to the info in Ernie's link, take a small, very bright flashlight along. Open the oil fill cap, and take a look down in there - if you see shiny metal, good. If you see sludge, not so good...

Thanks for the info so far. The guy I'm talking to values his bike at $4750. That seems to be an extraordinarily high price. I will try to post pictures in a bit.

Tyler - a Special Edition is valued by Kelley at $3700.00 trade, and $4585.00 dealer retail. If that is not an SE, that price is a bit high.

Well, I doubt he is going to come off his price. I may need to start looking for a different bike. Are there any real performance differences between the RS and the LT? I like the faring and luggage on the LT, but wouldn't want to give up significant performance. I've tried searching, but was unsuccessful.

Keep an eye on it - maybe he'll bring the price down a bit. Unless the bike is super nice, I don't know why he's asking that much. Yeah, it's got low miles, and some farkles, but...

Ultimately, you have to decide what the bike is worth to you.

Too bad Mr G is on the other side of the country...

The RS is a little faster - either one of them goes faster than you regularly want to, generally speaking. They'll both get you tickets - if you let them.

Depends on what kind of riding position you like. The LT lets you sit up, the RS leans you forward a bit...

Tyler,

As Jim noted- the LT is a more upright position, the RS more of a forward lean. sometimes too far for some riders. I have seen more than one RS with "bar backs" to decrease that forward lean.

It is certainly a personal preference.

But either model will move you at rapid speeds- very rapid.

BTW, you mention luggage- both do come with the side bags- the rear box is the difference.

I think I read about the LT having a skinnier rear tire. Is that something I could swap over from an RS? Does the skinnier rear tire something to really be concerned about?

I want a bike that will be the best between daily commuting, cornering ability (fun twisty rides), and long range comfort.

Have you seen this Virginia K-RS on Craigslist?

Yeah. The guy hasn't responded to my emails.

Having ridden neither bike thus far, I think I would rather have the RS. That said, I don't know if I'd pass up a nice LT if one came along. Neither bike seems to come up for sale extremely often.

The reason is the bike is not technically for sale. I traded a 2000 F350 to him last year for cash + a 1972 International Travelall. The truck's engine overheated and locked up, so I'm trying to get rid of it. He said he would be interested in buying the truck back if I ever wanted to sell, but he doesn't currently have the cash. The bike is something I want, so the trade makes sense on the face. My wife and I just paid for our wedding in June and just bought a house, so I have limited cash available, also making the trade attractive. Further, the market for a 1972 International Travelall with a locked up motor is limited. It's a very tough decision when I could potentially pay a lot less cash for a bike in as nice condition, but I don't know when, if ever, I'll be able to sell the truck for what I want for it.

This is key, and, because of the above story, I don't know if the answer is so easy... Obviously not something you guys can help with, although it would be nice if you could. Laughing

Agreed. That is a bike I would have been more than willing to purchase if shipping were affordable. I hate to see a good runner taken apart.

Thanks Gwen.

Knew Tyler was near to you but didn't want to volunteer you.

Tyler,

Gwen and Steverino would be very valuable in looking over any brick that you might have in mind.

Gwen (a.k.a. Shoganai) has had K bikes apart more than just about any of us.

A K-RS transmission transplant while in Alaska (?) She's done it.

A K-RS transmission completely pulled apart and rebuilt? Gwen has done that too.

Excellent source of info. She da' woman.

I really appreciate all the offers of help I've gotten. I will definitely be in contact when the time comes. The bike I'm looking at is in Bedford, but it's looking less likely that I'll end up with that one. I doubt I'll be able to buy a different bike until I sell my truck, so purchase may not be as imminent as I thought.
