|
|
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and a new LT owner. I have a mystery oil leak - cruised home for 80 miles at 60-80mph and had a left boot oil covered and a left fairing grille spattered with oil. No drips or obvious leaking tho!
Any suggestions as to where to look would be great.
Cheers,
Simon |

First of all, WELCOME!!
I can think of three likely sources- valve cover or oil pump or the oil pressure sensor.
Or, and this will be a long shot, but look at my old thread

Was there a triumph or norton in front of you?
I would say valve cover too, but it's easy to clean it all up with degreaser, leave the lowers off your fairing off and go for a spin and see where it's coming from. Maybe use some CSI grade baby powder around the engine to see it easier. _________________ K1100RS '97

Welcome Simon! Great bunch of folks here.
If you add your location to your profile, you might find that another member isn't too far away from you.
Also adding the year, make, and model of your machine to your signature is often helpful.
I'm with John on his 3 possibilities. My money is on it being the oil pressure sensor. Drikko's babypowder suggestion really works nicely and should help you pinpoint the problem
We love photos, so post 'em when you get a chance.

I resemble that remark
Glad you found us Simon, How did you know to come here ???
Don't use baby powder unless you want your bike to smell like a pooftah.
Plain flour works too. _________________ Regards Tim,

I'm a big fan of the UV light leak testers. I bought a kit that could do oil/fuel, coolant, and A/C for about $50 a few years ago. (Smaller kits for just oil/fuel would be even cheaper.) It has been very helpful with my vehicles. I would imagine you could find something of this sort over there as well.
Sorry, but I am no help on the source of the leak. _________________ Niemand

Could it be the tap that pushes into the top of the engine just behind the front cover, close to the temp switch?
My 95 LT has a couple hoses on a fitting that just pushes into the hole,no threads, sometimes it works up out of the hole and I have to push it back in?
Just something to check? Keith _________________ 1995 k1100lt daily ride(22953)when I got it

+1
I've fixed an oil leak on the front of my '95 at the timing chain cover. It's only sealed with RTV, and easy to have a leak if you aren't careful when applying it. _________________ Ride safe.

+1 on the UV light plus dye test. I've used it to find leaks in the oil systems of a dozen older cars & bikes I've worked on of my own & friends. _________________ No matter where you go, there you are. |

Did you remove the fairing to look? Could also be the gearbox if you've poured too much oil in it. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.
