Greetings to one'n'all

Got my first K1100LT. Well first BMW really. Forced into ownership by the superb riding position. Anything that makes my old arthritic hips and back feel more comfy has to be a bonus.

Still getting used to the high saddle, excess weight and flexible bars. Excess weight and German? Has to be called Sgt Shultz! Older riders will know who that is.

Anyway, 1st question. According to the manual, the cut in temp for the fan is 105 deg C. Anyone out there able to say roughly where that is on the gauge?

Answers to the above will receive never ending praise and appreciation.

Love, light & peace
Martin

1st Welcome....I chuckled when I saw the handle of "sgt shultz", one of my favorite shows growing up.......so I guess that dates me huh....Wink

As far as the temperature goes, just like a car there are variables. More-so with our bikes.

1st off you have the t-stat that can getting weak, but generally it opens before 200degF.

There are 3 different temps sensors. 1 for the gauge on the bottom of the water pump, 2 sensors combined on top of the engine block behind the radiator that are for the fuel management system and cooling fan control.

I have 2 different bikes and the fan starts a different points of the gauge on each one. BUT the fan does come on before the RED zone. If yours isn't I'd be checking the fan motor as it's not uncommon for them to seize up from non-use.

Start bike.

Let idle.

Watch gauge.

See when fan comes on.

If engine temp idiot light in the cluster comes on before you hear the fan then something may be wrong with your fan.

Do not worry about overheating and damaging the engine.

Here's the chain of events that occurs:

1) Thermostat kicks in
2) Fan comes on
3) Idiot light comes on
4) Radiator cap blows (like a car)

Probably a good idea to turn it off after the radiator cap blows.

Thanks chaps.

I've found out now as I was stuck in a lot of traffic the other day. The fan cut in just before the red zone and dropped it down to the middle of the gauge.

As with every problem solved, another appears. Sgt Shultz is fitted with a Meta M357 alarm and immobiliser which stops working when the engine gets that hot.

It was soon sorted though. I whipped the tank off to change the coolant and there was the alarm control box sitting on top of the engine! What a bloody place to put it! The company that fitted it was apparently a reputable bike alarm installer! Bunch of knobs I reckon.

Anyway, moved it to under the seat and all is restored to normal. The moral of the story is if you want something doing then its better to do it yourself!

Love, light & peace
