I have been lurkin' 'round here (and learning a ton-thanks) for the past couple of months as I picked up a 95 K11LT with 42,000 miles on the odo (but who knows if that was accurate or not) at the beginning of October. I put about 1000 miles on it during October but noticed that the engine was 'bogging' anytime the engine was put under load (freeway on ramps, passing, or climbing hills). It started off not being too bad and if I eased into the throttle I could work around it but it got steadily worse (to the point of being unsafe on the freeway) by the end of the month. A little investigating revealed that the rubber throttle body bushings and most of the rubber hoses, etc. were cracked and split so they were all replaced. Didn't fix the problem. More investigating and noticed the fuel tank was making vacuum and that fuel pump mount was broken and fuel pump was just hanging in tank. Fixed venting issue and made sure all the vent lines were free flowing, ordered new, installed all. Didn't fix problem. Bought a pressure gauge at Harbor Freight. Installed inline with fuel rail, 35-40 psi at start but fuel pressure decreased as riding time increased to point where bike would bog (less than 10 psi). Replaced fuel pump with new Ford Escort/Taurus/Mustang pump and she runs great. No more bogging but I left fuel pressure gauge on and it is still losing pressure over time. Started at 40 psi and got down to about 20 psi over 25+ mile test drive. Assuming that old pump wasn't the whole problem. With both old and new pump, shutting bike off (even while coasting with clutch in on freeway) for a second or two and starting back up restores fuel pressure to 40 psi. Could it be the fuel pressure regulator? Any suggestions for next steps? Thanks.

No mention of whether or not you replaced the fuel filter. For some reason that's a part of basic maintenance that often gets overlooked.

The filter was changed within a hundred miles of my purchase according to the previous owner. Rode to work this morning (approximately 25 miles) and fuel pressure remained at 40-41 psi for entire trip. Bike seemed to run much smoother as well. Will continue to update. Thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas.

The bike is running great for the most part. Still have the pressure gauge hooked up and in the morning the pressure hovers around 40 psi; in the afternoon on the way home pressure is around 35 psi. Except for today, shortly after low fuel warning light cam on and pressure had dropped to near 20 psi (enough to cause bogging on load). Returned to near 40 after fill up but mileage for the last two tanks is down to 33-34 mpg vs the 40 it ran all through October (of course now I am actually able to accelerate and maintain speed up hill). Any suggestions?

Where are you located at.
Do the fuel depot's change fuel blends at seasonal changes?

I am in SoCal, San Diego to be specific. I do believe they change blends but I am not sure when. Thanks for the replies.

I know that here in the midwest, when the fuel depot's change to the winter blended fuels, my mileage goes down.
Your mid 30's isn't bad if you are doing a fair amount on local riding.
I can speak for my bikes/riding that I don't get above 40mpg until it's continuous high-way riding.
You probably have a whole lot more freeway available to you than I have here, so 40's may be more regular to you than to me.

Yes I ride about 27 miles one way to work and 23 of that is on the freeway. My only experience with this bike was the 40 mpg I got in October ( my first month of ownership). All of November and most of December was spent changing out all the rubber parts that had cracked etc and then diagnosing and replacing fuel pump. Mostly concerned about the lower fuel pressure. Don't know if there is another issue that is killing my fuel pump or if the one I just changed was old ( it wasn't the original and this bike only has 42,000 on it according to the odometer). Thanks again for the replies and have a great weekend.

Have you replaced the fuel pressure regulator?

I am in the process of changing mine for a recent issue of erratic readings..

Mostly I get 38PSI but some times it goes to 50...

Also, when engine is stopped and the pressure is locked in, I applied vacuum with a mighty mac to the #4 Throttle Body vacuum hose to see if the pressure would dissipate to 0 (as mentioned in the haynes manual... BUT I'm not convinced this is correct) the pressure is maintained....

Because of these 2 facts I've elected to R&R the unit.

I have a early 85 K100 and have had the following issues this past year... (2013 where perhaps the 13 is the reason?!?)

1) Dirty Ignition Switch causing intermittent ops and bogging...

2) Ignition Module would cause a auto shut down when cold, and starter not cranking when cold intermittently... This was verified and repaired by Carmo in the Netherlands, they test and repair all the expensive BOSCH components...

http://www.carmo.nl/index.php?language=en

Good luck and I'm glad to be going into 2014, as I do a lot of WWR Rides for our returning soldiers, and it's absoulutly embarrassing to break down amongst a bunch of Harley rider's, in the Harley Squat repair mode!!

Thanks again. I took the pressure gauge off over the weekend as I haven't noticed any ride-ability issues even though the fuel pressure is mildly erratic. I have suspected a possible faulty fuel pressure regulator and will be on the look out for an inexpensive replacement to have on hand in case things turn worse.
I haven't got into any rides yet as I primarily bought this as a commuter but have a bunch of work buddies (law enforcement) who ride (primarily Harleys) and I can empathize with wanting to be the one lending a hand and not needing it because of a break down.
Thanks for all the help and I will continue to lurk and learn and post as needed. God bless and have a awesome and safe New Year.

FYI,, The 1100's don't use a vacuum controlled regulator like the older 75's and 100's. They are strictly a internal spring controlled unit, no adjustment that I'm aware of.
