Hi all,
I seem to be on top of most of the issues my current K came with, but this one is getting difficult to solve. I have run several searches of previous posts but can't find anything quite the same.
When I turn the ignition on, the fuel pump whirs, but sometimes it just keeps going, whereas I believe it should whir then stop until I start the engine. This coincides with a problem whilst riding. If the pump does not cut after a few seconds, then as I pull away in first gear, the engine dies. I then re-start and away we go as usual.
I have cleaned the four pin plug at the rear of the tank and the motronic connector. The TPS is set and the TB's balanced, and initially I thought I had cured it, but after a run yesterday it started again. It does it from cold or when hot, always first gear when moving off from a standstill. Before taking it apart today I turned the ignition on and the pump whirred then stopped as it should. I moved the bike a little and noticed it started whirring again, then stopping, and if I shake the bike, I can cause it to buzz on and off.
So, the questions are, could this be the fuel pump, sender, or regulator and how would I check?
Thanks in anticipation.

I am sure someone more savvy will chip in but I know from working on car ECU's it is usually the series of pulses from the crank sensor that tells the ECU to keep the petrol pump powered up ( ie because the engine is running) if your connection from the hall effect sensor which the K's have was a bit intermittent it may give you your problem , i would work back from the connector to it which is with the injector loom ? i think ? through the wiring back to the motronic ECU looking for bad joints ....
Good luck

The Motronic controls the fuel pump relay coil ground side, other side of the
relay coil is always hot as long the ignition is on.
It could be that you have a intermittent short to ground at the wire/or
connectors between the motronic and the fuel pump relay, the wire is
brown with a blue tracer. |

Thanks guys, I will have a look today. As with anything of this nature, I need to have a methodical approach, its a bit frustrating though as other than this, the bike is running great.

Any chance it might be down to the side stand cut-out switch being faulty? _________________ Matthew

Been hunting gremlins, checking wiring and switches and cleaning connectors.
Well I found two separate problems, and it now seems fine, although I am not sure if these things would have caused the symptoms I had or not.
First, the rubber gasket under the filler cap was fitted back to front, so the breather was blocked by it.
Secondly, the fuel pump was not fully seated in its bracket, therefore it would move around a bit as the bike moved.
Of course, in removing the tank I have removed and refitted the four pin plug that has caused other people no end of problems..............
So, fixed for now, I need to run it for a while to prove that it is so. Thanks for all of the advice so far, and fingers crossed.

Good news and bad, first the bad. So it was not fixed at all. I even cleaned it before a test ride, but it still decided to play up.
Now the good, I have found the problem. I went back to the tank and followed the wiring from the four pin, all seemed O.K. I did the same for the plug for the HES, which seemed O.K. and no amount of prodding it would cause the problem. Then I followed the wiring from the kill switch to the large connector under the tank and bingo. The slightest prod of this caused the pump to start and stop. With the tank in place, I could replicate what was happening. As you pull away, the fuel moves and the tank shifts slightly and pushes against the large connector, causing the wires to pull from either end. When I checked the plug it was loose. I have cleaned it fully, added a little grease and refitted, I put a little electrical tape around the outside to ensure it is held in firmly.
All seems well, and this time I am confident that I have it sussed.
Thanks again to those who offered advice.
