|
|
I did a quick search about this with no luck. I'm sure it's already in here somewhere, sorry.
You know what I did. Yes, I overtightened one of the oil filter cover screws and broke off the head.
So, first off, any advice on the best way to get the broken screw out? It's broken below plate level so I suspect I'll need to drill it out. I don't believe it is stripped.
Second, are replacement screws easy to get? Just hit my local dealer?
Thanks all! _________________ 1993 BMW K1100lt |

Somewhere here there is a picture of Gwen's (Shoganai) K-RS lying on its side on her lawn. That may be necessary to get a drill on the broken bolt.
BTW, you do use a torque wrench, right? While it isn't necessary for all the fasteners it is needed for a few crucial bolts/nuts.
Of course if you are of the tighter-is-better school of thought, a torque wrench can save you from what you are facing now.
Good luck! _________________ John & Cathy

As far as a replacement bolt, you local, larger hardware store might be a good source. My local one has an isle with lots of pull out drawers with SAE and metric bolts.
Think about replacing all 3- you might have stressed the other 2 and could end up with another oops. _________________ John & Cathy

Thanks very much! And yes, I did use a torque wrench set to the correct Nm's and still it snapped. I will say though, the torque wrench calibration is now in question. _________________ 1993 BMW K1100lt |

Those screws are M6 and need only about 8Nm of tightening torque. That is in the un-reliable range for many 3/8" torque wrenches. It may not be that your torque wrench is out of calibration; it may be more likely that it cannot reliably measure so low a torque. This is typical. The solution is to acquire a good "feel" for tightening these fasteners or use a smaller inch-ounce torque wrench. _________________ - Robert

If it snapped off within the thickness of the pan, you might be able to just take the oil filter off again, and reach up inside the pan and screw the rest of the bolt inward, and remove it from the insde of the oil pan.
Lowes and Home Depot have drawers of metric hex socket head screws, where ever you can find them, I'd replace all three. |

Success!! The clearance was no good so I did indeed have to lay the bike down on it's side. I did it very gently on an old comforter. Not a scratch!
Anyway, I was able to remove the broken screw with one of those "grabber" bits and my drill. What a great little tool! I was also able to find perfect match replacement screws and washers at of all places, Lowe's. Less than 2 bucks for all 3 screws!
Cover plate on...new oil in....fired right up and runs like a dream...no leaks. Love this bike!
Lesson learned. A mistake I won't make twice. Thanks all! _________________ 1993 BMW K1100lt |
