The radio in my LT worked but was pretty useless at highway speed so I decided to remove it to use the space for another fairing cubby. It was easy to remove the radio and it's mount, much easier to pull the whole thing out using a couple small screwdrivers to release the mount's clips than pull the radio out of the mount.
I covered the holes in the bottom of the radio box where the cable passed through with a piece of plastic riveted over them and tied back all the cables so nothing was cut out. That way the radio could be replaced with little effort. The antenna came out and a 1/2" plastic plug covers the antenna hole in the fairing.
All in all it was a worthwhile job, I gained another large lockable storage space and eliminated a bunch of rattles at the cost of a radio I don't use. With the two fairing cubbies, the tail compartment, top box and saddlebags I believe this bike can carry as much or more than in locked compartments than my Goldwing 1800 could.
The more I ride this bike the better I like it. I should have discovered the 'brick' long ago. Glad I finally did. _________________ Paul W.

The radio in the LT reminded me of the radio in my GL1500, it too had a cassette player. At least on the 'Wing you had full control and could turn it on and off without needing to open a lid. On the Goldwing it was loud enough and the bike was quiet enough I could listen okay to the radio on the speakers at highway speeds. On the LT I'm happy without it because having that extra space to carry junk means I don't have to put the panniers on very often. The cubbies and top box carry quite a bit without them. _________________ Paul W.

+1...Radio long removed. You should remove the speakers and any useless wire looms as well. The weight saved and its 'high' location surely make the bike handle easier/better...and that extra compartment is nice. _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

| I have a 1995 K1100LT and I also removed the radio. I decided to also remove the complete wiring hrness to allow for a bit more room under the seat for the remaining mass of wiring. In addition I removed the speakers on the top box and had the box repainted and holes filled by a local body shop. The top box looks 100% better without the lage speakers and the lid can now be lifted with one finger. I, like you, also appreciate the added storage space where the radio was housed. I retained the woring which pluged into the cigarate lighter and attached it to the inside top of the box with a small braket. This works great for charging my phone. |

I just got a 98 K1100LT SE and would like to see what it is like with a working radio before I go down the route of junking it completely - I just like the idea
As well as there being not a peep from the radio, the lighter socket is also non-functioning. I input the 4 digit code like it says in the instruction book but nothing happened. I tried this with the bike switched off, on and with engine running... still nothing.
Using old pushbike spokes, I removed the radio unit itself easily enough. I just can't see how its carrier comes out though. Without any other clues, I removed the eight tiny screws round the rubber seal - the carrier is sort of loose but won't come out.
The bike has a functioning autocom system fitted and a Garmin Zumo 600 wired bracket. My guess is that this latter is connected to the autocom rather than having anything to do with the factory fitted Clarion unit.
Below the carrier there's a nest of wiring and a random male spade connecter labelled ANT. AMP. not connected to anything.
I would be very grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction of removing the radio carrier bracket so I can investigate the spaghetti between it and the base of the fairing pocket.
Would it help if I put the radio back in and replaced all the little screws?
At the moment I feel like Marconi must have, waiting for a trans-Atlantic crackle through the ether.
Should add that I have checked the flat fuse in the base of the radio and it is good.
PS: Apart from the above, the other reason I'm fiddling with the radio is that I'm waiting for my Clymer manual to arrive - so a bit of a hold-up on other items on the "to do" list.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Push a thin screw driver down those two holes in the front ant back of the bracket that are a bit inboard. There are two pieces of metal that act as catches that hold the thing in. You just need to push something down the front and back to hold the clips back and the case will easily pull out, easier than the radio. _________________ Paul W.

It's also a similar one in the middle at LHS/Outer side (when sitting on the bike).
Since the cigarette lighter don't function, have you checked the fuses? |

Thank you chaps, I'll give that a try. Have checked bike fuses behind l/h side panel - all good. Have checked fuse in base of radio - also good. Hoping there's a disconnect or blown inline fuse in the tangled loom beneath the radio carrier. Also, on another thread was some advice about clearing a bad security code before resetting with correct code. Will report back! Thanks again Inge K. and exdavid. _________________ 1998 K1100LT SE

This is a pic of the clips that are holding your carrier in place.
This is what the carrier side looks like.

Right, THOSE three holes. I thought they were either missing screws or for hooking into to remove the carrier - I'd struggled with wire coathangers through the half-moon slots for half an hour - then came back and found your picture Scott. I'd just assumed they were a different model. Makes perfect sense now and "pop" out it came. I need to label all the wires as mine has had some satnav/autocom surgery I think, then undo the connections and try to find out where the power outage is occurring. Just by way of evidence, here's mine. Thanks Scott and everyone for the help. The investigation will continue in better light, hopefully next week.

Power for the Radio....
Un-switched power from fuse F9 on red-blue wire
Switched power from fuse F8 on violet-black wire, it should spit to 2 inputs on the radio.
The lighter socket should also be connected to the violet/black wire. _________________ Ride safe.
