My 93 recently serviced K1100LT failed shortly after the start of a journey this week. I spoke to the mechanic who serviced the bike to ascertain what they may have disturbed during service to eliminate any problems that may have arisen from that work. Still no joy. Called AA recovery who did a few basic checks and found no spark. 12 volt feed to coils was OK but could not detect a signal to the coils. This has had me looking at threads relating to the Hall Sensor. I have very little mechanical knowledge and am baffled by electrics. I do have a multi meter but not sure of the operation. Does anyone have any simple step by step advise.
I am not sure where the Hall Sensor is situated on the bike but have found two terminals near the front of the crank but from the look of the coolant hose next to them guess this is something to do with water temp.
As a final resort it will have to go to the garage but I am keen to resolve this myself. Not just for financial reasons but also for my own satisfaction.

1st question: do you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key on? and/or do you see the gauges move?

If the answer is no, I'd first check the side stand switch as it will kill the engine electrics.
You said that you had +12 to the coils, so that tells me that your key switch and safety kill switch are working.

The 2nd thing I'd check, being it's a 93, is the spark ignition amplifier module. It has been known to act up/cut out when the bike is running.(caused by degradation of heat sink past on it's mounting). It is wired in-between the coil packs and the motronic with the signal(ground) line of the coil packs(not the +12 line).

Sorry should have said fuel checks out with pressure to the rail. What does the spark amplifier look like. Are you able to tell me where it is fitted on my model and how to test it.

Does it crank?

Sorry to offer these basics but do you by any chance have:
- kill switch on or faulty
- sidestand down or it's switch faulty as suggested above

I'm going with side stand switch. Many times it's not that the switch faulty but may just be slightly out of alignment so it doesn't always get fully engaged. A quick/easy/cheap fix for this is to put a short section of vacuum hose over the tang that depresses the switch.

Yes engine cranks fine. I think the side stand switch must have been by-passed by a previous owner as the bike has always started side stand up or down for the last 4 years.

Double-check the bypass.

Remove and reseat the connector for the Moronic.

Check fuses too.

Well in this diagram it's part #17.

The part is a hold-over from the earlier K1004V's and are only used on the '93 1100's. I can't exactly advise how to test, or where you will find it.
It is most likely mounted on something metal for heat dissipation purposes. You might look for it and just re-seat the connector.
Same as for the motronic as Duck mentioned above. Some spray contact cleaner couldn't hurt either.

As the AA guy didn't find any spark......we keep it to the ignition system.
The ignition amp which Scott allready have mentioned is a good place to start.

From the drawing posted by Scott you can see what it look like....and you
find it in the bottom front LHS of the battery housing....also check that the
ground cable nearby is connected and clean.

The amp have 7 numbered contacts:
1. Output to cyl. 1-4 (black/blue)
2. Input to cyl. 1-4 (black)
3. -
4. Common ground (Brown).
5. -
6. Output to cyl. 2-3 (black/red)
7. Input to cyl. 2-3 (black/white)

First measure between #4 and # 1&6, both should be open...or amp to the bin.

If OK, have a look at this don't if it helps, but.....

Bolted to the left front lower part of the battery tray.

Thanks to all that helped on this. Identified the amp on the battery carrier. The earth to the back of the starter was fairly grubby as was the plate between amp and carrier. All cleaned and put back together with a good squirt of contact cleaner as advised. Motronic plug blown out and contact cleaner applied. All back together, pressed starter and hey presto. Back in business. 10 mile test ride, no problems. Thanks again.

You should clean the contact patch for the ignition amp and place a healthy dose of heat sink compound behind it.
