I was caught in very heavy rain on my K1100LTSE (1998 model) and at one stage had to ride through flood water about 12" deep for about 100 yards. Everything was working fine and I rode on for about another 30 miles and stopped for a coffee.

When I got back on the bike the ABS would not set up and the warning lights were persistently flashing alternately. I took the bike to a dealer to have the system checked and the ABS reset, however the Diagnostic computer failed to show any fault.

I then decided to disable the ABS and removed the relay and the bulb within the instrument unit. The brakes work fine but I would like to get them back to working with the ABS.

I have checked the pick up on the front and it was set up with the correct gap within tolerances. The sensor itself was removed and found the 3mm screws holding it to the fork leg, little more than finger tight.

The rear sensor was similarly checked and found to be dirty but gapped correctly. I then replaced the relay and the bulb and tried to reset the system but failed. I still have alternate flashing indicators and no ABS

Any ideas please.

How old is your battery? Seems the ABS systems are very sensitive to low or old batteries. Maybe your recent rain ride pushed it over the edge?

Other than that, check and clean all the electrical connections. They were often a source of problems for me.

You could also try removing and reinstalling the sensors just for the heck of it...and swapping out some of the shims and see if makes a difference, I once found removing one shim made the system happy again(?).

At which point the warning lamps start with the alternate flashing?
As soon as you turn on the ignition?
When you run the starter?
When you drive away?

It is virtually new- perhaps only 4 months old and holds the charge well.

I have now had both sensors out cleaned and refitted them The gaps are spot on right in the middle of the scale.

To be honest I did not tke any notice what the sequence of flashing was, all I know is they were flashing out of sync when I rode away. What difference does it make please. I will hazard a guess that it was as soon as I started to move.

I don't know If I mentioned it before but I took it to an engineer who was unable to diagnose the fault on his up to date BMW Equipment. All the readout said was No Fault Found - or something similar. It was at this stage I decided that the relay and bulb would have to be removed.

As soon as you turn on the ignition - most likely control unit (brain) or open circuit on a sensor.
When you run the starter - most likely the voltage goes below the predetermined value due to a weak battery or a bad connection in the power supply circuit.
When you drive away - most likely wrong sensor gap or problem with hydro unit.
