My bike ain't sellin yet so I've been riding it. Just 300 miles so far since May around town and to work. I've been using it as a monster moped really. Sounds funny but I really have not given the bike a microscopic check of every nook and cranny. Today before getting on the bike to go home from work I usually smoke a cigarette and walk around the bike. While looking at the front axle ,left side, drivers side, if you will. I noticed a oblong hole drilled through the end of the front axle like there should be some locking pin banged through with safety pins top and bottom, but there is nothing there. Just the four bolts clamping to the fork.Safety wise it looked odd. Checked my factory repair manual and it does't show a front axle with a hole drilled vertically through. It does show a axle with a threaded end which a bolt is screwed into. Do I have yet another after market piece. It just doesn't look safe to me. I know you want pix Im not good with. _________________ 1993 K1100lt |

One end of the axel has a hole through it where you can stick in a screwdriver or such to twist and pull the axel out. The other end should have a "bolt" screwed into it intot he end of the axel, that's the piece that keeps it from sliding out if all four of the allen head clamps loosen. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Ok, then I'm looking at it backwards. The axle shaft pulls out from the left side sitting on the bike. That's what that hole is for. _________________ 1993 K1100lt |

sounds odd, as the axle end with the hole should be on the righthand side when sitting on the bike. The left hand side should have a bolt screwed into it with an allen hex hole sunk in so that it is flush with the forks. (as N41EF said).
You cant have the axle in backwards, as one side of it is wider than the other, i.e. the hole in the RHS fork leg is larger than the LHS fork leg.
Have another look and let us know.
To take off the axle, unscrew the LHS bolt with an allen key, then loosen the four retaining bolts on the forks. Then slot in a screwdriver into the hole and use it to pull out the axle. _________________ '08 K1200GT

Just looked at factory manual again and my axle setup is just the opposite. Locking bolt on right side and oval hole through axle is on left side. Ridden 300 miles so far and wheel still on. Weird though. _________________ 1993 K1100lt |

That is weird.
My next though is that the forks are on the wrong sides. I think you wouldn't be able to get the mudguard on if this was the case. Other than that, there is no reason, afaik, that they wouldn't work like that. It would stuff up the service schedule as they take different amounts of fork oil on a fill - 350 on left leg and 400 on right.
It's not a bobber, is it?
Please come back about the mudguard as my curiosity as been piqued. _________________ '08 K1200GT

Tetros, how about a picture of what you have.
Corkboy, it is possible to mount the forks on the opposite sides, but it would be like everything would be 180 deg around.
The brake calipers would be on the top/front side instead of the back side, and the fork drain holes would be to the front, abs sensor would be on the right side(as sitting on the bike) etc.... you get the idea. And yes the fender would be backwards as well.
Would definitely be a head turner. _________________ Ride safe.

Scott,
Since the slider rotates in the leg, it would be possible to have the brake on the back, i.e. you are just dropping the fork out of the yoke, moving it over and sliding it back up, you are not rotating the fork through 180 degrees.
For this to be possible, all mounting holes, including brakes have to be on the vertical centreline of he forks, and I'm not sure they are.
Or I could be mistaken, it happens a lot.
But you got me thinking, the other difference is the ABS sensor.....
Tetros - which side is the abs sensor mounted on? - that will definitively tell us if the forks are on the correct sides. _________________ '08 K1200GT

Yes, the forks would have to be swapped left/right in order to get the center bridge to fit, not just rotating it on the stanchion(which I really wasn't trying to imply). _________________ Ride safe.

Added 3 pix to craigslist of front wheel. 1st 2 pixs of right side showing hole through axle. Last pix if left side with abs sensor visible and axle lock bolt. You'll have to use link in previous messages above. _________________ 1993 K1100lt |

Well, the pic's indicate that the assembly is correct. The threaded axle retaining bolt is on the left(as sitting on seat) side with the ABS sensor.

I think your wording was backwards, as the pictures indicate that it is assembled correctly. _________________ Ride safe.

Whew!
we can all sleep soundly in our beds again.
I had to make sure initially that you were in the US, as "Drivers side" is the other side where I live (just to confuse matters further)
Good luck with the sale, nice looking bike. _________________ '08 K1200GT
