Can anyone advise me how to remove the re-set knob on the left hand side of the instrument console? I have fitted one to another bike (K75) where it was already missing, by pushing it in until the claws on the end of the shaft clicked into place.

Is removal of the knob, simply a reversal of the fitting procedure? I don't want to damage anything by pulling too hard

Problem 2.

Can anyone also suggest why the rear bulb monitor seems to have stopped working? The warning light does not come on at all. I have checked the bulbs at the rear and they are OK. (new)

I have changed the sensor relay inside the fuse box with a known good one off my K75 and still it doesn't work. (Same part numbers).

I have tested the 3w bulb in the console and it is working.

Reasoning suggests that the only reason the relay comes into play is when the rear lights cease to work.

It has been suggested that the problem may lie with the brake light switches (In particular the front) but as the brake lights work with both switches operated independantlyI cannot see the connection (no joke intended).

I can live with it not working but would prefer to have the facility.

Knob: after the circlip and spring have been removed from the inside of the cluster, you should be able to pull the knob straight out.

BMU unit: have you checked fuse #1, if OK...check if you have power on terminal 15 in the relay socket when the ignition is on.
(if fuse #1 is blown, also most control lamps will stay dark and no power to the starter).

Do you have power to fuse #2 as well.
Euro spec bike? do you have the headlight switch turned on?

Fuse OK, as are the idiot lights (apart from the brake failure) are OK, and the bike starts no problem.

Remove the relay and try to ground terminal K in the relay socket.
Still no light....the problem is most likely a open circuit between the socket and bulb holder.

Grunter - are you using BMW bulbs? Or aftermarket imports? Some imported bulbs do not seem to work with the bulb monitor - I guess the filament does not allow that trickle of current the BMU needs.

I had a problem with aftermarket bulbs years ago - I've used BMW bulbs since with no problem.

Before the device ceased to work the bulbs had not been changed from when I bought the bike so if they worked before there is no reason they should not work now. The bulbs are made by 'Ring' who supply bulbs to BMW anyway.

The point about terminal K looks promising I will check the circuitry tomorrow. I had looked at the wiring diagram and could see that all it appeared to be connected to was the bulb in the console.

I assume I switch on the ignition, and connect terminal K to the appropriate terminal of the battery, to make the curcuit.

Hi John,

The output from the BMU on the K terminal is just an earth, so connect a wire to a nearby frame.

Problem now sorted. This was traced to a broken wire close to the multi-pin block behind the instrument console. new setion of wire soldered in and everything's back to normal.

Just for clarity, it was the wire from the K terminal on the BMU that was broken near the multi point connector at the headstock end..

Yes, It took some finding because the break was actually under the plastic sheathing covering all the cables to the left hand side of the cable block.
