|
|
I know there's tonnes of info on this already here but I haven't found anything directly relating to my issue. Bike is a '94 K1100RS with ABS II. Its never been any trouble since I've owned it which is 19 years now. However, I was riding home is extremely wet weather including some high speed runs through flooding I didn't see until late as it was dark. Bike was fine until a few miles from home when the ABS lights kicked in flashing alternatively.
This was a few weeks ago and my first thought was that water got in somewhere however, the ABS lights still flash alternatively when the ignition is first turned on and never go off. I have reset the ABS II in the normal manner on about 20 occasions but no joy. I have disconnected the battery and removed the ECU leaving it overnight. The battery was only a week old when this happened and voltage is fine as it is from the alternator (14.2 v) when the engine is running. There is nothing obvious I can see with the sensors and gaps being in spec. The only clue I have is that when I ride the bike I don't get the tell tale "clicking" from under the bike when it does the self test.
Any ideas on my next port of call to look at?
Thanks

Bob Lutz's post in this thread http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=91868#91868 speaks some wisdom regarding your problem. See what failure code your ABS is throwing, that should give you some idea how serious a problem it is. _________________ '02 - GL1800

Just saw your mail and having fixed my own self made prob here is what I did; The fault has been resolved; I checked both sensors, both 136 ohm so taken to be ok. Removed the power cables cover at the back of the ABS ecu; all cables where they should be; took out the multipin plug at the front and found the very top pin connector in the ABS unit was bent over, - (easily put back in line) - by me putting it back with the unit fastened down with three allen screws. So I removed these screws and got a bit of movement of the unit and with a bit more care and pushing the front brakelines in a bit got the plug in squarely. The reset procedure got the lights back into synch and a test run was enjoyed in the sun!

Thanks Tony. I haven't had an opportunity yet to take a look at the problem - just too cold in the garage! I don't see how this could be related but both heated grips have packed up at the same time (fuse is OK). Anyway, when the weather gets warmer I'll switch to the "summer bike" and start taking things apart.

Inspect both sensor cables. If not positioned properly they can rub against the wheels. get worn and fault the ABS brain. DAMHIK _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Can it really be this simple?
Had some downtime today and the big GSA has been put back on the road so I thought I'd take a look at the problem and see if I could find the fault. Took the tank off and opened up the relay box. Turning on the ignition I can feel and hear which relay is clicking in time with the ABS lights. I removed the relay (its the blue one) and just tried putting another back in it's place. Hey presto, both ABS light are flashing in unison once again.
A quick look on Motorworks site says a new one is £12 about $16. I'll order one after Easter. Is it going to be that simple? I haven't ridden the bike to see if the ABS actually works as I'll wait until the new relay arrives. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

No, it isn't that simple......the ABS warning relay is a NC relay, the other relays in the relay Box is NO relays.
That's why the warning lamps now flash in unison, and it just looks like everything is OK. |

Oh well back to the drawing board - thanks Inge.
I'll start on the sensors then. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

My K11 ABS failed about a year ago and I removed the relay and the bulb in the instrument console and ran it without. It was diagnosed with a ECU fault that could not be recified.
Now I don't know if I was imagining things, but twice the other day, when I started the bike I am certain that I felt through the footrest (but didn't hear) the familiar metalic click as if the ABS was trying to set itself up.
I think I must be imagining things but would this be possible? _________________ 1997 K1100LT

Having put a meter on the sensors, the rear has continuity but the front doesn't. I assume that's indicative of a failed sensor. The sensor itself looks well corroded into the fork bracket so I doubt it will come out without force. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

You should measure ~135 ohms on a OK sensor. |

If you only remove the bulbs and and the warning relay in the relay box......
you have only disabled the warning functions......the ABS itself is still up and (mal)function. |

If it's failed and you are going to replace it, what does it matter if you have to force out the old one...... just sayin. The only caution would be to try and not damage the shims if possible.
Until you put the new one in and measure, you won't know if you will need any of the shims or not. _________________ Ride safe.

Of course, I was mostly concerning myself with destroying the sensor bracket or the fork once I take a hammer to it. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

I'd soak the screws with some penetrating fluid of some kind for a while to at least be able to remove them. They will be more fragile than the old sensor itself.
I wouldn't take a hammer to it... find yourself a pair of vice grips to clamp onto it and work it out. _________________ Ride safe.

If your sensor screws are buggered up, I have spares assuming they are the same as my LT's.
I also have a GS 911 that will read ABS2 codes. Its currently loaned out, but I can mail it to you when I get it back, or you could show up at HM. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Well now I feel like a right idiot. Taking the wiring apart this morning with some decent daylight so I can see what I'm doing, it turns out I had the wrong plug - the one I thought was the front sensor, wasn't. Having found the right one (duh!) it seems both sensors are reading 130 ohms. I've checked the gaps too and these are both in spec. So that just leaves the "brain" correct? _________________ 1980 CB900FA

So...N41EF lent me his GS911 so I could clear the fault code in my ABS2.
Worked great, cleared the fault code.
NOW...when I release the brake, either front or back, the single red warning light flashes.
Anyone know what that's trying to tell me?
I hooked up the computer again and are no fault codes currently. _________________ '20 R1250RS - The RS
