K1100LT 1998. 39,000 miles
I have had a good scout through the pump-related posts here and watched Mike's/spidiq8's/M1ks's videos but they seem mostly to do with replacing seals rather than diagnosis, so I hope nobody minds me opening a new thread.
I'm still a little intimated working on the bike, but I reckon I'm up to a pump removal if not a full seal service.
It started with barely nothing but now I'm seeing a small droplet of oil after riding accumulating at the bottom of the pump cover. It seems to trickle down from behind the oil pump in what Clymer would call the 2 o'clock position looking at the bike from the front.
Apparently this indicates that the oil relief U channel is blocked.
There is neither water nor oil dripping from the weep hole, which is unobstructed as far as I can tell.
I THINK this means I need to drain fluids, remove the pump, clean up the oil relief U channel (with a needle, syringe or what - advice welcome?). Replace the O rings, clean up the mating surfaces and screw and ThreeBond the thing back on - avoiding the U channel
Does the lack of any fluid from the weep hole mean my pump seals are OK?
I'm fairly sure someone's been in there before as the visible bolts are all stainless.
So far, all I have done is pull the fairing lowers, clean up the crud, take it for a thrash round the bypass and watch for the source of fresh oil on returning back home.
If I don't need to replace the seals, would it be wise to do it anyway, given that I'm in there with fluids drained and fairing's off etc?
Also, is it just my copy or are all the photos of the removal procedure in the Clymer manual upside down?
Any help with the diagnosis would be warmly welcome. Thanks in advance! _________________ 1998 K1100LT SE

Look at your water tank, does it look like a pool of scum. Wher my oil
seal, shaft went south my RS started sucking oil into the coolent. I had no
water in the oil. The lix was replacing the water pump shaft and flushing
out the cooling system. NOT a easy thing to do
Good luck Bob |

Here is the thread that I posted a few years ago about the water/oil pump leak.
http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8395&highlight=channel
Last year I had the seal leak on the oil pump, so instead of trying to replace the seals, I just bought a new water/oil pump assembly.
But I don't think I would replace the pump shaft seals if they aren't leaking.
BTW, if you do remove the pump, look at the manual. After you remove all the pump cover bolts, there are bolts inside the pump that need to be removed to pull the pump off.
Also, after you check out and/or clean out the U channel and are prepping the engine to bolt the pump on, use VERY little sealant on the clean engine surfaces.
If you have any questions- post them. LOTS of experience here on the Owners Group.
Good luck- but it isn't a very difficult job. _________________ John & Cathy

Thanks SugarHillCTD. This and your historic link push me in the direction of a blocked U channel so I'll give it a go. ThreeBond seems to be recommended so I'll get some of that and a couple of O rings. Thanks again, Rob _________________ 1998 K1100LT SE

Thanks. The coolant is overdue for replacement but I just did an oil change recently but it'll be worth the effort to get the Nether Regions looking (and smelling) less toxic. _________________ 1998 K1100LT SE

Thanks bobdcamp, no. Clear coolant and oily oil, no evidence of cross contamination and no drips of anything from the weep hole at the front bottom of the engine casing. I guess the pump seals are OK and it has good bladder control _________________ 1998 K1100LT SE
