Life has been busy with medical stuff and my poor 1993 K1100LT has been sadly neglected. The front master cylinder had a bit of a leak, I've had no time to fix it. Now I have a bit of time, so I ordered a rebuild kit (mistake).

I tried to install the rebuild kit, but it appears the pivot bolt for the break lever is not going to come out. The bolt turns easily, but I think it tore the treads out of the casting. Unhappiness.

Looking online, it looks like all the available used master cylinder assemblies are heavily pitted/worn. The new part is about $500. That's a LOT of unhappiness.

Are there any other options? I'm not above bit of ugliness or whatever- it just has to work, not look pretty.

Thanks!

Chuck - I have sort of a parts bike here - let me see if I have those parts.

The master cylinder I have probably needs a rebuild kit, but the lever and bolt should be good.

Per my email to you, Chuck, I will post it again here for others to see:

The issue with removing the pivot bolt from from 4V front master is that there is a nylon sleeve on the bolt that swells over time or whatever and can make it extremely difficult to pull that pivot bolt down once it reaches the end of its threads. This difficulty in removal is compounded by the fact that the head of the bolt is only partially exposed when it reaches the end of its threads.

For an "easy" one, you can use a good Allen wrench (like the one in the factory toolkit) and apply some angular force to get it to hold in the bolt head and then wiggle and turn while pulling down.

If that doesn't work then my next step is to carefully get some Vise-Grips sideways on what little of the bolt head is exposed and pull it down that way.

I had a heck of a time getting one out a couple of months ago and it took me a couple of hours and much swearing to eventually get it out. I forget exactly how I did it but when I finally got it out I had pretty much destroyed the head of the bolt so that it was no longer usable.

Before putting the replacement one in I filed down that nylon sleeve a bit and lubed it in the hope that that will make future maintenance easier.

Hmmm- I thought I posted a reply- I wonder where..?

Mr Duck- If you are ever passing near Detroit, I'm buying the beer. Suitable threats and persuasion did indeed remove the silly bolt and the silly nylon thing.

It looks like my M/C is pitted enough to call it dead. I honed it in the hopes of getting at least a short term fix. It will pit again, but I just dislocated my knee and won't be on my 2 wheeler for a bit. I want to ride now Very Happy My K1100 is the tug on my sidecar rig.

Looking at the UK suppliers was a great idea. Moto-bins looks like $380 USD, delivered. It still hurts, but less than buying on this side of the pond.
