|
|
I had a k100 monoveler and performed rear spline lube every 15k.
Now someone told me that paraveler bikes only needs clutch spline lube...the rear is ok without lubing.
This new to me k1100, has 75K miles and changed clutch disc at the dealer before 3k miles.
So i am ok with that....(i assume they used grease in the splines)
What about rear spline?I found also a very little play when i rock rear wheel at 12-6 o clock position...No clunk...just barely |

The transmissions of the 1100's are supposed to have an input shaft made with a tad bit harder material, so they can go longer on a clutch spline lube.
As far as the drive shaft, the "sliding" point of a paralever drive shaft is the intermediate spline(the middle of the drive shaft where it splits). The ends with the U-joints(transmission output shaft, and FD input shaft) are held in place with circular clips in the splines so they don't normally move(hence they don't need regular lubrication). _________________ Ride safe.

The paralever drive shaft splines don't wear on a K1100 like they do on K75s/K100s so whoever told you that the clutch splines are the ones you need to worry about is correct.
It's a good idea to lube the rear splines though when you take the rear end apart to do a clutch spline lube. It certainly can't hurt. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Question, what is the most common lubricant used for the clutch splines? Where does everyone get it?
Thanks again! _________________ Eric R

To support Flying Duck, in the BMW workshop service manual for the K1100/R1100/R1150 there is no provision whatsoever to lubricate the rear splines. All have a similar paralever suspension. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

In the past on my K75s I have used high temperature Molygrease, but more recently I use a white paste grease that is more resistant to being thrown off even when hot.
BMW used to sell it, but at an exorbitant price so now I use the same, sold under the Castrol brand name, costing a fraction of the price. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

BMW used the staburags. Not sure on the spelling?
After digging deeper into this intronet.
Castrol makes a equevalient lube? Less expensive and way easier to obtain. This seams like the way to go.
I would like to hear a few more opinions, since it is a lot of work and time to get to the clutch. Plus how much more work is it to replace the rear seal? I assume it's a one piece seal? Wich would mean a heck of a lot more!
This is good stuff I'm excited...... _________________ Eric R
