Hey All,

It's been years since I've posted here...mainly because 1). I haven't been riding much, and 2). bike's been fine. But I just had brake fluid leaking from just under the lever so I figured it's time to rebuild the piston.

For the bleedin' life of me, I can't remove the bolt that holds the brake lever to the brake assembly. It's a 4 mm (I think) Allen mounted upsidedown. It unscrews out about 1/4", then just stops. It will keep turning, but won't come out. What in the world am I doing wrong (other than working on this thing myself)? Thanks, P. Zombie

For what it's worth, I'm referring to the bolt in step #9:

That's "normal." (And a crappy design IMO) The threads end before any of the Allen head is exposed.

It's 5mm.

Try putting some rotational force on the Allen wrench so that it "holds" in the bolt head and pulling down.

Thanks Duck!

The Allen head is plenty exposed: I'm able to unscrew it so about 1/4" is exposed. Then turning it does nothing: it just spins and spins. I know there's a bushing inside (part #6, below), and I have a faint memory of working on this several years and it was the bushing that made it a total PITA. - Blake

If you can get some Vise-Grips on the head then you can pull it out that way but try doing it as described above first.

I sand that bushing down a little with some fine sand paper and then lube it before reinserting it. (In case I need to pull it apart again.)

Well our old friend Brute Force worked....thanks for that, Duck!

I have a vague memory from many years ago when my brake lever was sticky, and I had to do the same damn thing to lube up that same damn bushing.

History repeating! Thanks again for being there,

Blake
