A month ago I took a long trip to NC. After a two hour stint the butt was getting sore so I stood and bit to get to a different position. My boot caught the side cover and it started to come off. At 80 mph, I almost lost it. I was able to exit and get it back on. But I am wondering if there is a better way to keep them on.
The C clips are broken on both sides. So all I have is the interference fit at the front, the weak clip at the back and the male/female attachment. Has anyone come up with a solution for this? I was think zip ties, but I would hate to drill holes in the clean covers. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

How about removing the broken stub completely and fastening (with epoxy) something like this in its place?
Or even one of these with a zip tie around the frame lug. I have used these on the roof of our RV to fasten the solar wiring. They are still holding fast after 2+ years
With either one you wouldn't have to drill through the finished side of the cover. _________________ John & Cathy

That just may do the trick. I will get back to the board with the success. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I dug into my side cover issue. I bought the clips Duck suggested, but I do not have that type of holder for the C clip. The one on the left side of the bike has a pillar holding the broken C clip. The right side has been bodged by the previous owner and uses a bunch of duct tape and spongy two sided tape. Just trying to come up with ideas on how to hold those clips on. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

John:
I think you could get those clips to work on an LT but obviously the key is to give them a solid base in the right place in which to mount them on the inside of the LT side covers.
I have some ideas on how this could be accomplished but am too lazy to type the several paragraphs it would take me to describe. If you want to chat on the phone about it I'd be happy to talk with you to share my ideas.
Drop me a PM and Ill give you my phone number so you can call me. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I have access to a 3d Printer at work. I am going to design a perch and glue it on and see how that works. Once I get one that works I will share the file. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

My .02.
That sounds like a good idea. When you glue your new perch to the inside of the side cover make sure to rough up the surface of the inside of the side cover to ensure better adhesion. Also use the best adhesive you can find. I'd use something like JB weld or, better yet, fiberglass resin/hardener that comes with a fiberglass repair kit.
Good luck and keep us posted. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
