I've got a '96 K1100RS that has an ABS fault. For a long time now. I can't get it to reset.
I was going to bring it to the BMW hospital and see what they can do.
But I'm curious; how much weight do you think would be saved by stripping the system out and just running regular brakes? I don't have ABS on my Boxer Cup and don't miss it. I don't miss it on this bike either, and the blinking lights are annoying.

I think the most that you would gain would be the weight of the pump/cpu assy, which isn't that much in the grand scheme of things.

Do you know what the fault code is?
If not you should try to find out what it is.

Take a read of these threads if you haven't already:

http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2110
http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,538.msg52238.html#msg52238

Can you remember back to when the fault started, what was happening.
Riding thru water, had front wheel off, rear caliper off, etc....
Sometimes when re-installing a front wheel you can get the fork spacing not set the same as when it came apart and that can throw a fault, real easy to do.

A GS-911 will read the codes and tell you what's going on. I have one if you need to use it for a few days.

A couple pieces of black electrical tape takes care of the annoyance of blinking lights...

Someone here took the ABS off their bike and weighed it - I forget if it was 12 pounds or 21 pounds - somewhere in there. Like Scott said, not a significant amount on these bikes - not enough to notice a difference or get better mileage.

Could I? That would be great. I sent you a PM.
Thanks - J.

It really isn't worth the effort to remove the later ABS - the weight saving is minimal and you will be left with a big gap where it used to be and clearly visible from the side. Then you have to make new brake lines to connect everything up

I don't know what the situation is in the US but there are electronics firms who will repair motorcycle ECU's for a fraction of the cost of even a good 2nd hand one and also guarantee them for a year or more.

My ABS went AWOL over a year ago and the diagnostics told me the ECU was toast! So to stop the flashing light in the instrument housing I simply removed the relay from inside the relay box and the bulb from the instrument housing,

I have never like ABS, my personal feeling is it luls you into a false sense of security and to be honest I cannot recall one time when the ABS actually kicked in.

I stripped the abs out of my 1994LT, I don't miss it at all. I would say total weight would be around 8-10kgs.

Not to get into a whole big ABS discussion but ABS on my bikes has saved me a few fairings. (Mostly from gravel under the front wheel that I did not see when stopping.)

On the early Ks it is somewhat rudimentary but it does work.

Guess I'd rather have it - and not need it, than need it and not have it...

10kgs = 22 pounds
A 590 bike at 100 HP is 5.9#/HP
22/5.9 = 3.7HP
Swap out the exhaust and eliminate the catalytic converter...lose the side-stand I never use...all free horsepower.
And before any of you smart butts says anything...I'm down over 30# myself!!!
