So the little yellow 'light' comes on at 165 miles, 10 miles later she's stuttering on a slight incline. Turned back, filled up, 18.65 litres which suggests there are still nearly 3 litres in the tank (?) so why is it stuttering so early? _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

Steve - according to the Rider's Manual, the tank holds 19.5 litres/5.2 US gallons. 5.2 gallons = 19.684141 L _________________ Jim

Hmmm... That's interesting. You wouldn't think they made two different tanks. Wonder if it's the difference with or without the flapper? Probably. Do you guys in Europe have the flapper? I was told that was for California emissions standards. _________________ Jim

Mine holds 22l.
Once I measured with the tank off the bike.
It's an European model.

No, we don't have a Flapper, which is why our tanks should hold more.
Steve, 165 Uk Miles, full to lamp is normal (have had 240 cruising in Germany), if a little low, dependant upon how much "enjoyment" used. However, I am usually OK for 20 miles after it illuminates. I would first change the fuel filter, if you haven't done that during your ownership. When mine's really low, I hear the pump, but never had the stuttering. Whilst you are in the tank, check the integrity of the hoses. HTH _________________ Regards Tim,

I thought the UK had adopted the International mile - 5,280 feet. I haven't found any conversion table for a UK mile - so I don't know if it's the same as a mile or not...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mile
If your fuel warning light is coming on too soon for you, you can bend the float wire to adjust it.
FWIW - I've run out twice - once at 239 miles, and once at 240 miles. Both times running at highway speeds and pulling a Uni-go. I have the flapper out - so I should get the 22 L fill up. _________________ Jim

By the way, what is a flapper?
The only flapper I'm familiar with is the crapper flapper, you know that tiny rubber thingy attached to a chain at the bottom of the toilet reservoir.

An imperial gallon (Canadian as well) is a larger gallon than a US gallon. That's why I sometimes get 63mpg on my K1100. But the mile is the mile.

Scroll down to #16 - then look for "tank" - it's the bottom left, just above #18.
Also here: http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=47926
The flapper is #11 - pictured, but not listed.
Unless you happen to have a bike that had to meet California emissions, your bike will apparently not have a flapper. It's a device that sits in the fuel filler neck with a little springy flapper thingy that you push out of the way with the fuel nozzle. Since this apparatus extends down into the tank, you can't easily put as much fuel in the tank. _________________ Jim

I'd like to hear from the gents across the pond - some of whom refer to the UK mile.
I haven't seen an Imperial gallon in a long, long time, Brent. I don't know of any gasolene companies in Ontario that are selling in Imperial gallons - they're all selling in litres. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication_in_Canada _________________ Jim

This is true, but some of us old timers still refer to canadian miles per gallon instead of hte newer liters per 100 kilometers. It always seems bass ackwards to me.
