During a recent trip my '96 K1100RS consumed about a half quart of oil every 700 miles. The bike has 33,430 miles. Is this normal consumption?

Geoff,

My departed '93 RS would burn up a quart +/- in about 1000 miles in hotter weather, much less in spring and fall.

My non-technical solution was to run 45w oil in summer- 2 qts of 40w plus 2 qts of 50w. Seemed to decrease consumption somewhat.

But oil consumption seems to vary widely from one brick engine to the next. I expect any other responses to your post to run the spectrum.

Geoff - the '97 I ride has used as much as a quart/1,000 miles - which is in spec, I think. Mine seems to do better with certain kinds of oil - I have it on Castrol Act*evo right now, it's not using as much. The K actually used more when I tried synthetic.

Just ride it and enjoy it.

My K11RS also burned a quart every 1k or so, less when I switched to synthetic. Two things made that go up, really hot weather and really spirited riding.

For some reason, it burned less when I retorqued the exhaust bolts, though that might have been some other reason.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like my consumption is normal. Guess I'll just have to carry more oil on road trips. I haven't done this since I rode an '83 (AMF era) Harley, which leaked.

FYI: I usually carry spare oil in a 20oz plastic Coke bottle.

I agree.

But FWIW having added Lucus oil treatment, the oil consumption has dropped noticability. It helped release stuck rings thus improving compression and oil leak-by into the compression chamber.

I'm typically not a fan of snake oil, but I might give this a try. Is the actual name on the bottle "Lucus oil treatment"?

I don't know where I posted it but I felt the same way and resisted for over a year.

Because I was in doubt, I did a wet and dry compression test pre "Lucus" and post.

The numbers don't lie.

Compression went up on three cylinders and the one that didn't was already at near factory spec.

I'll see if I can find my posts on the results.

EDIT: Found it http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=37839&highlight=#37839

It was RESTORE Engine treatment not Lucas the first time.
Ever since I've added Lucas with ever oil change.

My old 85 K hardly went down at all in 4000 miles. My 97K uses at least a quart, if not more, in 4000?

That's not bad. I woudln't worry about it.

On my recent 3,300 mile round trip to SD I changed the oil with Mobil 1 prior to departure and used maybe half a quart or so on the trip.

Shogs, thanks for the link. I noticed the post was dated Oct 28, 2008. How is your oil consumption today?

Still have the same benefits.
I won't go back to 'just oil'.

on the trip to and from hungry mother 3 this year, 2200mi total trip:

my brothers (now sold Sad ) 93 k11rs used about 1qt total
my 93 k11rs used maybe a 1/4 qt. i had no need to add at any point in the trip nor have i needed to since.

apparently, though these bricks are likely to survive the nuclear holocaust and a zombie apocalypse, the oil usage is YMMV? i'll take that.

Besides a Yamaha RD series 2-stroke I used to ride, I've never owned a bike that consumes so much oil. I average about 80 mph on road trips. Perhaps I should slow down to save gas and oil!

About 4 litres a month, judging by the number of times she's had it apart.... Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hi,
I had 2 K1100LT's. The first one I bought with 14k miles on it and sold it with 124k on it. It used about 1 qt. every 3k miles. It mattered little whether I was going fast or slow, used conventional or synthetic, it still used a qt. every 3k miles. The second one was 10 years old when I bought it, and it had less han 5k miles on it. I ran 20w50 conventional oil (actually Soriana brand I bought in Mexico) until 20k miles and then switched to Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic. The oil level NEVER dropped, regardless of how I rode the bike! It died when I hit a deer at 65mph.

Mine has had synthetic in it since day one and it uses about a pint every 1000. I'm waiting for it to break in and the consumption to diminish. Smile

Gday All
Act of last resort, looked at the manual. For both RS and LT max consumption is 0.15 lt a 100 klm. So maybe anything less is just the normal variation between engines. Mine has always sat on one litre every 10000 klm regardless of speed but up a bit with summer temps.
