A new bulb makes no difference, I only had a high beam. Now I just have the "flash to pass" feature. Has anyone "fixed", or replaced this switch?

See here: http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/headlight-switch.shtml

If you want a good used switch assembly, drop me an email or PM.

Now is a good time to consider installing headlight relays so your next switch is less prone to failure.

Great article!

After reading however, I would opt for the good used switch offered And relay installation.....

Brass thiningees and small springs pouncing out all over the garage are not my idea of fun, as they always seem to gravitate under the workbench where the spiders hang...

I did it and it actually worked when I put it back together. Shocked

Decided to replace the entire switch assembly and cabling. Now have to get the tank off.
Exposing more of my ignorance, what is a "headlight relay", and why should I install one? (I am having thoughts of using an HID light)

Chris - the wiring that BMW (and other manufacturers) uses on the bikes is undersized for the amount of power the bulb is capable of drawing. You add a relay - and a larger gauge wire from the battery to the bulb - and use the smaller original wire to trigger the relay. The lower current draw the relay uses saves your switch - the larger gauge wire gives you more light.

You can make your own relay setup, but if you want plug and play, here's the best place to get it: http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Products/H4_Kits/h4_kits.html

I'll +1 for EasternBeaver.
I just put a relay kit w/modulator on mine. Once we figured out that the modulator had a wiring fault from the mfgr, everything works wonderful.
More light and a better visibility safety margin.

+ another for Eastern Beaver. I had him add an extra relay to control my aux lights. They turn off when the high beam is switched on per Ohio law. I also had him put a means to add an inline switch so that I can turn the aux lights off at will.

Thanks all for the information. The relay sounds like great addition.
Installing the new left hand switch group went smoothly, other than the radiator fan no longer seems to operate. I am assuming I unplugged something digging around in the snakes' nest under the tank. So off with the tank again this weekend.

Chris, before you go the effort of removing the tank again, check out the fan test section of this link.

Just to make sure or not that you acutally have a problem.

Got this far... I disconnected the temperature sensor, and the fan runs,
continuously. Is that the way it should work? At least I know the fan runs. I thought I would have to "jumper" the sensor to check the fan.

After playing with the fan, it now runs normally.??? I have no idea what that was/is all about. Thanks for the info on the eastern beaver relay. It is great.

My switch has now gone bad. Dead spots, no high beam except in the momentary position. Having read the switch repair article I'm viewing that as a last resort. Anyone have a good used switch? Duck?

I've got one that I took of my '95. Don't think that it's going back on it either.

There's nothing wrong with it, I just wanted my windsreen control on the handle bar and not down on the dash pad so I picked up a switch off of a '97 and replaced it.

Thanks, guys. I worked out a deal with Jim. I'll throw his in then rehab mine so it might be available for the next poor soul to dredge up this thread. What a great forum this is!

Well as it turned out, Jim didn't have the one he thought he had, but as I may have mentioned elsewhere, Scott brought his to HL1 and I installed it to end the problem. Meanwhile I disassembled mine, cleaned it, pared off some roughness that had built up on the inner plastic face, and put it back together. Today my tank was a little low and I plugged in the old one and no improvement, can get momentary high beam but not high beam on. I might try again but thanks to Scott, I'm in good shape for now.
