Friends,

Not that I can afford it but the "maintenance free" feature of the new K1300GT caught my eye. Does this mean no spline lubes? no final drive oil changes or ???

* Even more traction and pulling force, particularly at low and medium engine speeds, through the increase in engine capacity.
* Engine output 160 hp at 9,000 rpm, peak torque of 99 ft-lb at 8,000 rpm.
* Significant increase in torque from 3,500 rpm.
* Fulfillment of the strictest environmental standards through newly set-up Digital Motor Electronics.
* Optimization of the emission system through rear mufflers modified inside and a fully-controlled three-way catalytic converter.
* Desmodromic operation of the gas lever function for even better and more precise gas dosage.
* Optimized, maintenance-free shaft drive with a new, two-stage drive shaft.
* Even greater driving precision and optimized response combined with maximum riding stability ensured by the optimized Duolever front-wheel suspension complete with a newly designed lower longitudinal arm.
* Second-generation ESA II Electronically Adjustable Suspension and ASC Automatic Stability Control as an option.
* New, innovative generation of switches and controls with optimized ergonomics.
* Integral ABS (semi-integral) featured as standard for a high level of active safety.

Sounds good, but how can anything that involves rotating metal and articulating joints be maintenance free?

I think BMW saw the error of their ways - I forget which bike it was - but after who knows how many drive failures, they added drain and fill holes. I think they then said the final drive lube only had to be changed at 600 miles and never again.

I guess maintenance free means when it burns up, simply discard and replace, viola, no maintenance!

BMW does not let any of the dealers even try to fix a failed final drive. The ones that fail are sent back to the Mothership, and replacements are sent out. BMW still has not acknowledged there is/was ever a problem.

I'm just as skeptical as the rest of you.

I thought perhaps there was some new design that BMW had started using with this generation of bike. I'm curious as to what makes them so confident given that they keep seeing failures on recent models.

I still find it immensly comical that our old birds have bulletproof final drives yet the new, supposedly "better" models are detonating at an astonishing rate. Smile

Exactly!

Even if I had $20K to cough up for a K1300GT I would not do it because I'm not confident it will match the reliability of my K1100LT.

The FJR1300 comes with ONE YEAR warranty. WTF? Motorcycle companies must think we are rich AND stupid.

I'd rather buy a used LT if I was shopping.......
