I'm taking the LT apart today for a survey and R&R. The forks are coming off as well for a badly needed rebuild, so the pertinent questions are:
-what's the least expensive place to get the seals?
-am I buying a kit or just two seals?
-where do I get the gaiters?
-should I experiment with oil weight for my intended results? (250lbs pilot + a 140lbs passenger and no luggage)
-what about oil level?
-would installing Progressive/Race Tech/etc springs be worth the investment?

I've rebuilt several forks before and most times I was able to get a 'formula' handed down that worked for my particular application. This one's different, so any advice is greatly welcome.
I do have a shop manual, so diss/ass is no problemo...

You might want to consider these instead of the gaiters...

^^ Those don't fit the LT without some cutting of the plastic above the forks.

I took someones advise here and took a heat gun to them so they would clear the plastic part to which you are referring.
You just get the seals, parts are sold separately.
10 wt oil and yes I would upgrade the springs also along with the rear shock as long as I'm spending your money! Very Happy

Rancho shockboots - part # 1952 - fit perfectly. Go to the Rancho website and do a dealer lookup to findsome locally.

Or you could get some OEM ones for R bikes - they're only like $35 EACH! Laughing

I think they were maybe a little over $20.00 per when I got them for Dr. Malacarne. When I got them for the K, they were $18.00. I hope they haven't gone up that much!

Duck is sort of right, they are $45 a pop! Another option are the Pro Comp shock boots @ $7.99/pair. Part number is 12127. I put them on the K75 I am building. They are thicker than the Rancho's or Energy Suspension versions and higher durometer so they do not sag over time like the others tend to. Also the taper is less pronounced. IMO the OEM R bike boots are best, but getting too rich for my blood.

Back to one of your original questions

If you're handy with a dremmel or a file and not afraid to try, here's an option.
They may not be a direct dropin replacement but they are inexpensive and I haven't had any leaks yet with them. And they are only like $10 for the PAIR, not $40 each for the BMW from a dealer.

http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6165

I also went with the Rancho fork boots. Got them off Amazon for like less than 15 for the pair. I had to trim off the top 1 inch for 2 reasons. 1 it fit on the fork tube better, and 2nd it looks better not all scrunched up.
Don't forget a moisture weep hole at the rear bottom.

Hi,
+1 on the Rancho gaiters. I put OEM gaiters on my first K1100LT (gaiters for the /6 or /7 airheads) and they worked fine, but they are BMW parts and, as such, are PRICEY!! The Rancho gaiters work and fit fine.
