I was headed home this afternoon, going north at about 60 on a two lane when I got hit by the worst crosswind I've ever experienced. It knocked me sideways and heeled me over about 20 degrees into the wind. Was glad I had 700 lbs of brick under me and not some flimsy Japanese looker.

I hit a few of those on Rte 8 through Torrington today, it's a very creepy feeling, but it wakes you up better than any cup of coffee....

its a daily occurrence out here...

first its important to predict what the wind is going to do and be prepared for the worst case...

loosen up... dont stiff arm the bars... gently counter steer into the wind...

seems backwards at first and beyond motophysics... but it works...

Judging from the lean angle before it corrected that seems to be the effect of what I did though I certainly wasn't thinking about it. It was like being well into a turn while still going straight. I think the gyroscopic effect makes the bike want to stay up unless you really screw up.

The gyroscopic effect....... and the porky nature (600+lbs.) of a K1100.

That is one situation where the weight that we curse when we have to back up a slight uphill is actually to our benefit.

I once was riding Hwy 395 just north of Mojave, CA and I had to ride on the shoulder leaned over at maybe 30mph. It was that bad. Any faster and a gust of lack of would send me flying off one way or the other. I was gripping as much as I could with my knees. Shocked

Hill St Blues, by any chance?

When I get cross winds, I find (although it takes balls to do it) that I cope better If I ride faster. Seems that the faster the flow of air over the bike, the less the effect of the side wind, within limits of course. Still have no cure for it trying to rip my sunglasses off (open face helmet).

Have a buddy that rides an Oilhead...large gust of wind caught him by surprise almost pushed him into oncoming traffic. He pulled over after and proceeded to puke....that's scared, and he can ride well.

I find it dangerous when going over a bridge, as the bike goes back and forth as you pass the stanchions.

Good advice on not tensing up...easier said than done.

Got hit with a cross wind once while rideing in Germany. Started across one of those high long bridges that they build to short cut having to drive through a deep valley, cross wind pushed me into the left lane (4 lane highway) no sooner had I gotten back into the right lane that a Porsche came past me doing about 200 kph. That experience has never left my mind and every time I cross a bridge of any real size and length I start looking for wind socks and get nervious. It was on a lot lighter bike, but still. What a wake up call.

Better than trying to quickly take off a full face helmet when you forget that you are wearing glasses!
