Not sure if anyone has had this problem or not, if so and you know the prob please postl
Yesterday i stopped on a ride, everything was working fine, took off and noticed the tach was not working, turned off the ignition and restarted it and still nothing, then shortly after that it slowly raised up over a few miles to be correct but would not drop as it should, then a few miles later it was working correctly.. made a few stops after that and never another problem
Any help is appreciated.. _________________ 1993 K1100LT

Hello!
Well it looks like cleaning and drying the instruments internals and instrument connector is waiting for You. Look at http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech.shtml for some instructions.

Were you parked where the cluster was in direct sunlight? _________________

It was during the middle of the afternoon, I don't think it was, but i wasn't really paying attention to if it was in the sun or not, I had stopped for a quick soda and it was in a parking spot.. Then i was on my way _________________ 1993 K1100LT

I ask because the same thing happened to me recently, parked my K75RT in direct sunlight for an hour or so and the tach stuck, only returning to normal when I was off and riding (and it was out of constant, direct sunlight.) In intense sunlight they sometimes warp a bit causing the needle to hang, return to normal pretty quickly though. It has not happened since, though I am careful now not to park it with the sun directly on the cluster. _________________

Look at it from the sides around the edges of the face plate and you can see if it's warped or not. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Ah, the wonders of MotoMeters. Ted's comment mirrors my own experiences. Here in Arizona, warping of the faceplates occur easily during the heat of summer. As a guideline for myself, I try to park the Beemer in a shaded area or facing the sun, thereby, shading the instrument panel. If that isn't possible, I place a white terry face cloth over the gauges and hold it in place with a rubber band. _________________ 1996 K1100RS SE, K1100K, K75S, Laverda 1200

After the same slow working/no working (while in the sun) tach problems finally annoyed me enough, two years ago I did the instant glue fix. Never had a problem again. And come to think of it even after Saltcreek and I did our gauge tech morning the crazy glue held fast. No shims, no rag over the faces needed.
Worked so well I haven't thought about it at all until this thread. _________________ John & Cathy

For the benefit of newer forum members, SugarHill, will you elaborate on your glue method? Thanks. _________________ 1996 K1100RS SE, K1100K, K75S, Laverda 1200

Not responding for John.
Someone on the forum (can't remember who) took the cluster apart and lifted the face enough to get some RTV under there. Guess almost any kind of glue would work. If you go this route, be very aware that the tach and speedo needles/hands will bend if you look at them wrong. _________________ Jim

OK, NOW you've got me over the proverbial barrel. Can't remember where I saw the "how to" on this one.
First of all, with an LT the gauge removal is a major PITA compared to an RS. But once you have the gauge guts in your hands (you have pulled it off the bike and have extracted it from the case) gently lift the face of the tach- DO NOT BEND THE NEEDLE!! and look at where the face would contact the backside. Place several small dots of instant (crazy) glue there and gently press and hold the face down onto the glued support.
BTW- this is what Jim explained but using instant glue instead of RTV adhesive.
Easy to do. With an LT, it will take you longer to get to the scene of the crime than it will to fix the tach.

It's not that bad John, just pull the windscreen assy off 1st. Then it's easy. _________________ Ride safe.

When I did the initial LED upgrade on my LT, I removed the cluster without removing the windscreen assembly. In retrospect, I have no clue how I accomplished it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I don't either. I just looked at the procedure as another opportunity to clean and lube the windshield sliders - with DuPont teflon, of course. _________________ Jim

The glue, then, is used to add strength to the faceplate and prevent warping, right? Might work. Anyone with a K bike will become familiar with MotoMeter removal and reinstallation . In fact, I have a reserve cluster for both the K11 and K75S. _________________ 1996 K1100RS SE, K1100K, K75S, Laverda 1200

But the RS is just 2 nuts total (on the bike, not the guys holding wrenches). Under a minute. Just comparing the two. _________________ John & Cathy

I understand John. It comes with experience and repetitiveness.
I've had mine(windscreen assy) on/off enough(over the years) I could probably do it in my sleep, and in about a minute.
That and I have not owned an RS either for comparison. _________________ Ride safe.
