Searched again - can't find much.
There was muck on the underside of the rad cap.
Looks as if oil was in water at some time but not now.

Very faint traces of oil when I refilled it.
There is muck under the pump but it's not 'leaking' as such.

Do I really have to do the pump ??
Does it come out clean - not attached to any other components
e.g. the rocker cover??

I actually have the seal kit but no gaskets.

This is how I took mine off.

Be aware that there are more bolts than you think. They are kinda hidden on top and back. Embarassed If you tap it with a hammer via a wooden block and it doesn't pop right off, look for a bolt (or two) you didn't remove.

DAMHIK Shocked

As for rebuilding it; it didn't look that tough in the Service Manuel but the Clymer has better pictures. Wink

look at my post on the subject back in March April

I reckon the muck and oils was casused by loose bolts rather than worn seals - however I replaced the seals (twice!!!) as I had planned ahead and bought the kit.

No gaskets, just sealant Rolling Eyes

When you have it apart, look at my thread about the "oil return channel"

Good luck,
John

Wow, I wish I had seen that before I took mine off.

I saw that odd little hole and thought it was a flaw in the casting.

So I read the fine print, the one you pointed out, and learned what it was I was seeing.

Yes no gaskets, just sealant bewteen the pump and the bike.

Gwen - hope you don't have to pull it apart to clean sealant out of the oil return channel...

The telltale sign of that (stupid little) "U" channel being plugged up, most likely with sealant, is oil seeping out from around the oil/water pump assembly at the 2 o'clock position- looking straight at the pump.

As I had written when I posted about that semi-secret little channel, the trick is to use enough sealant (see the diagram in the manual) to seal the pump but not too much. Too much and it will just clog up that "U" channel. Crying or Very sad

A gasket would have been a MUCH better design.

But Gwen, if you don't have that nasty leak like I did (again look at the "before" picture in the "U" channel thread), it is probably OK. Then don't worry about it.

John

It's not hard, approach it sensibly with the right attitude tools and patience and you'll be surprised how easy it really is.

Videos of when I did mine here:

Hope it helps.
