Hi,

Getting set to go to college this morning and when I went to start up, the fuel pump failed to buzz-up, but the bike will turn over. Everything was fine, last night and it had a good run out.

I'm guessing relay or connector.

The problem is, that the Clymer manual doesn't actually show me (at least not in a way I comprehend) where these things are, except in close-up, or drawings. No use to me.

Can anyone post, or point me at a couple of pics, showing me where the relay is and where the connector is, please?

This bike has now let me down more often than any other in my 30 years of riding. That's really irritating.

Howdy Jack,

Reading these tech threads has proven that there are several things that could cause the behavior you mention. The best way to attack these things is by getting as much info as possible for exactly what is happening and equally as important, when it is happening. For your issue (and I am guessing here in a few places) I would print out this page (and keep it on the bike in a zip-loc bag) and do something like this:
Problem: Fuel pump failed to energize
When: When cold, first start.
Behavior: When key on/kill switch off, All cluster lights on, pump fails to spin up. Starter spins up normally.

Initial and easy diagnosing that you can do on a roadside and may just get you moving

1. Fuel Pump Fuse - take it out to inspect it, replace if bad - I highly recommend carrying a bulb kit with spare fuses. I got mine for $20 at EUBMW.com and it is very complete
2. Motronic Connector - these can become partially unseated over time. Also, the pins in the connector can sometimes become dirty. Take the phillips head screwdriver and remove the connector and reseat.
3. Sidestand Switch. You can buy a little plug that allows you to bypass it from a dealer for $15 or so, PN#61121459998 - very helpful in diagnosing if you want to keep that safety feature intact. Otherwise, you can bypass the sidestand switch easily to see if yours has failed. That said, this might not be an issue as I believe the cluster lights do not come on when the sidestand cutout switch has failed (correct me please if I am wrong?)
4. Fuel Pumps - when fuel pumps go bad they often exhibit the symptom of not spinning up after being shut down for a while (this progresses to failing while riding.) You can easily tell your pump is failing by, when it fails to spin up, giving the pump a sudden jar and seeing if it then works fine. A quick and easy test is thwack the bottom left side of the tank with the flat of a gloved hand being mindful that the tanks are aluminum and dent easily. If the fuel pump springs to life you likely have a new pump in your future.
5. Grounds - check the battery and frame ground points for loose connections and corrosion.
6. Relay - Check this thread for an excellent graphic showing the location of the fuel pump relay. Remove it, clean the tangs, re-insert.

Let's try these easy things first before the more In-depth Diagnosis.

For what it is worth, you will need a voltmeter - I HIGHLY recommend the pocket multimeter sold by RadioShack - it is about the size of a pack of cards and fits perfectly in the tail cowl:

Stop by your local RadioShack for item#2104114, it looks like RadioShack has in its infinite wisdom, stopped carrying it on their website. I have the older version c.1996 that is still working perfectly.

Also of note, the K100 troubleshooting page mentioned above is written for LE-Jetronic fuel injection on the K100/K75 not the motronic you have, but the basic troubleshooting holds true. For in-depth Motronic diagnosis, see this thread:

Thanks, mate. Very handy info!

The problem appears to have been the relay needing to be re-seated, so I yanked it, gave the contacts a rub over and walloped it back in. The pump buzzed-up and the bike started.

I'm all sorted.

Thanks very much!

Ok, I'm sorry, but I gotta rant a little
I still love ya brother & I hope ya get it sorted out, but.....

If ya bought a neglected POS ride, it's gonna drive ya crazy till ya work through all of the neglect. And then, it may still be a well loved POS.
So recognize when you've had enough, cut it loose, get something you can live with.

Garage time is therapy for me. When work blows.. when I can't yet stand another dumb ass question or BS answer from the production foor....when I actually become so enraged by someone's ass hattery that I go momentarily blind, blind like a white out in a blizzard blind, and it's all I can do to not commit a mortal sin, I must have garage time.

I bought a gently neglected 93K1100RS. Oh the PO polished this & that and had the hard work done by the stealer. But 2,000 miles in eight years is all he rode it. I had to work through a few things, but it never left me stranded, yet.
So after some weekends and some late nights, I've had little to do this year but ride it.
Day in, day out, starts, goes, goes faster, stops great, repeat.
To work, to the store, to the library, to the bank, to the video store, to the river, to the wide open and all inbetween. It just goes, everytime.

So, I've been meaning to ask this site, WTF is wrong with my bike?

I truely hope you can fix yours & keep it, but only do so if you REALLY like it. They aren't the end all of bikes. There are others, oh so many many others.
Find a bike fit for your needs, grow from there, less that poiseness negelected POS steals your love of the ride.

Rant off, peace out.

LoL - sounds like it is working just fine now Smile

You make an excellent point - these bikes are built to make up for a lot of little problems and they definitely build up unless the owner can put in the time to keep them at bay. A bike that has not been ridden or maintained usually has a goodly amount of work to get back to earning its Brick reputation. Fortunately it is usually pretty easy and inexpensive stuff and you end up with a bike that will provide miles and miles of smiles!
