Welcome, where in UK? There's plenty of us Brits here.
Hope i'm wrong, sounds like someone has fitted the gear switch upside down, tis a bitch to get to too.

Gonna wait for responses to the flopping fuel gauge. I suspect that, from what I've read, there's a problem with the coils against which a contact point from the float reads the fuel level.

Have that problem on the '95 I just obtained (the '96, obviously, is missing the whole internal assembly of pump, filter and fuel level sensor). But that's just a small issue in the set of challenges I'm facing, so any info on what you find out will be useful.

Thanks

What do you mean by "flopping around?" Some of the fuel gauges are damped and some are not.

That would be the ever-intrepid Jim Smile I swear I can be up at 3am and get a new member notice and by the time I can then open the boards to approve it Jim has already beat me to it!

Does the fuel needle bounce around without any accuracy or does it bounce around slightly, around the correct level?

Couple of documents from the German K-teknik site might help you.

Circuit to stabalize the fuel gauge.
http://k-technik.pytalhost.com/pdf/tankanzeige.pdf

Writeup on testing the gear indicator for proper operation:
http://k-technik.pytalhost.com/pdf/Ganganzeige.pdf

Though they are in German, using Google Translate on the URLs will yeild you a very rough English translation, enough to get you through the documents.
