I own a 1994 K1100 RS has about 45,000 miles on the bike.
Just about everything seems to work well on the bike. I have a problem with the bike when riding and attemping to break through the post 80 MPH barrier at about 5,000 on the tach.
I have narrowed the issue down to what I think is a TPS(throttle position sensor).
I'm leaning in the direction of the TPS because if I ease off the throttle when I experience the hesitation/stumble and immediately lay on the throttle the bike responds but only temporarily. I have to systematically ease off slightly then roll back on the power to ease the bike into the post 80 MPH range or to get into the post 5,000 RPM range. This problem use to be intermittent. Now it seems consistent.
I removed the TPS. It looks good??? Is there a way to test the TPS?
How Do I adjust the TPS when I reinstall this or a new TPS??

Hi Jimmy - welcome to K11OG. When is the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Great point, Jim. Those tend to be neglected for some reason. I do mine every 10k and am surprised at how clogged they get. Never seemed to be an issue in any cars I had though.

Jimmy: the Napa Gold 3032 costs a bunch less than the BMW one.

Not sure when it was last changed.

I bought the bike last year and this filter was already in there.
I did take the filter out, and the fuel coming out of it seemed clear. I'm not sure if you can visually judge if a filter is good or bad so I'll replace the filter to eliminate this as a possible issue.
I have already replaced the plugs, checked the plug wires, run injector cleaner, replaced battery (old one dead over winter).

The way to check the fuel filter is to blow though it. Air should flow pretty freely through it.

Ok I chnaged the fuel filter. Problem seems worse. I took the bike out for a ride. It seems to respond some what better but I notice really strong hesitation in all gears at all rpms. Bike will accelerate but hesitates worse then before. I can get past 80 mph but heavy hesitation. I have to admit the old fuel filter is very difficult to blow through. I replaced this with a Napa Gold suggested on one of the sites Perhaps it's not a close enough match for the stock, so I ordered a stock filter. It does look like the line is a little kinked. I never noticed it before so maybe its nothing, but the bike immediately seemed to idle different then I noticed in the past. I have ordered new in tank fuel lines and the correct stock filter. Besides the possibilty that the line is kinked in some way (still idles pretty smoothly) is it possible removing the TPS made the original issue worse. I'm getting close to ordering a TPS. Seems lots of similar issues like this ended up being solved by replacing the TPS.

The cost of new TPS is high. Before buy a new one you can check if is wrong or not. I think you must have the Motronic 2.2 on the K1100RS.Just make a search in the Forum about TPS problems .

I see the link for the TPS adjustment. I will have to work with that a little. I didn't see where it could be adjusted but I can now see that it can it rotated slightly thus adjusting the positioinng where it meets the throttle body.
I do have the necessary meters and such so I'll take a wack at it. This may have been the problem all along. Seems to be worse since I removed the TPS. Most people don't have digital meters or the abiltiy to adjust so it's possible it was miss adjusted when I bought the bike and I made it worse.

If you have an BMW authorised dealer near to you,is a question of 5min.for him to reset it properly.

I'm not certain about this but it seems if the engine wasn't broke in properly when it was new,it will hesitate at that r.p.m.
Back when I was younger, I got a new 82 650 nighthawk and rode north up I-5 in california at 60 mph, that was about 5 grand on the tack, and it was very difficult to get over 5 grand the whole time I rode after that!!
just my .2 cents worth keith

When I first got the bike it did hesitate at 5 k, but not as much and it was more intermittent. SInce I pulled the TPS off the bike and put it back on its worse. The problem is I also replaced the fuel filter at the same time so both could be contributing to the problem. I would find a BMW dealer but I hear they charge quite a bit, At least I'll learn something if I attempt the adjustment myself.
The Biike is also hesitating/stutttering at just about any RPM since I pulled the TPS off.

About the fuel filter,Are all the hose clamps tight so it can't suck air or else blow out gas thru a loose clamp? just something to check to hope to get u going with all the power you want!!

Ok I tried the diagnostics test today.
The only thing that seems to work as described is the fan test.
The alternate test quoted by John Down under works as described.

One thing I notice that may change things is that the wiring for pin #2 on the diagnostic connector is supposed to be Brown/White.
I am seeing a Brown/Blue wire.

I am seeing really low voltage between pins 1 and 4 on the TPS connector. I am wondering if I am reading the diagnostics routine wrong. The way I read this I am supposed to short pin three on the diagnostics connector then read the voltage between pin 1 and 4 on the TPS connector.
Also when reading the voltage at pin #1 of the diagnostics connector (with pin # 3 still grounded), I'm seeing a constant 12 volts no matter what the position of the Throttle is.

Any suggestions?
