Anyone recognize this type of driveshaft rebuild (who done it?)
Some very nice welding build up was done on every bearing cup surface.
With all this welding; boring holes to size and cutting retaining ring
grooves I would imagine this rebuild fairly costly. Not sure how it would
compare to cost of new piece.
No idea of miles on this unit - all bearings are tight. I do wish it had grease fittings installed.

Good morning Dave...
I understand that "Hendersen Precision Mfg" does exactly this type of rebuild. You could call/email them to see the details...

Dave,
Rusty @ MaxBMW (THE parts guy) recommended Bruno for driveshaft repairs.
http://www.brunos.us/
Don't know who did the repairs on yours
but in the next few weeks I have to send my driveshaft to him. _________________ John & Cathy

Hi, John,
If you also send the final drive , he will also rebuild the splines and make them a bit longer than stock. His rebuilds, I believe, are better than new stock parts. _________________ Ride Safe,

Thanks Phil,
I am going to start pulling the bike apart this week since it looks like winter is here (had to use the tractor/snowblower twice already)
Will look over the drivetrain parts for what needs to be R&R.

| Could aligning the direction / angle of the crossing in both end of the driveshaft influence lifetime ? |

Phasing?
I had a drive shaft U-joint blow out on me at about 53k miles (while at HM3). I had a spline lube job done by a dealer when I bought the bike at 41k miles. I suspect maybe they didn't phase the joints (due to some other sloppy work) when re-installing , but I sure did when I installed a used replacement one.
So far, so good... _________________ Steve

My front U joint failed @ 92K. (trans + Drive shaft R&R).
I am told that is about Par for these bikes. My local indy wrench keeps a D/S on the shelf for the K1200RS bikes. or I would get one of those.
If my '91 K100RS just
had a 6 speed ..I would be a bit happier...but I have managed to log 65,000 on it. _________________ Tom Connolly

Well with this non-winter (NO snow but still pretty cold- 0°F here today) I set about pulling the driveshaft.
Last summer I had pulled it and detected very slight looseness in the front U-joint. Figured I could get through the rest of the riding season as is. It turned out to last until now.
Today I spent the morning in the garage (warm, well lit and bike on a lift makes it a much easier job) pulling the rear end apart. What did I find?
The front u-joint now has more play/slop.
One of the swingarm/FD pivot roller bearings is missing a few rollers! The missing rollers were down in the rubber boot along with some gear oil which means that.....
The pinion shaft seal into the FD is leaking.
NUTS!
So, driveshaft needs to go to Bruno for new joints.
Tom Cutter has plain bearings to replace the broken roller bearings- ordered them today.
and I might find out if MaxBMW will do the seal repairs when I carry the FD in, while I wait and wander around the showroom
Then it's on to new F & R suspension and we will be back on the road.
We are setting the K up as our dedicated 2-up ride- the R bike will be for solo fun.

OK folks, opinions please.........
Just found out that my driveshaft repair (just need 1 new universal joint, they do both) from Bruno will be about $500US They use new joints that have grease fittings.
Anyone else think this is a bit excessive?
Alternatives:
Tom Cutter referred me to Hendersen Precision http://www.hendersenprecision.com/index.html who will do the work on the one joint that is bad for about $190US
OR- find a used one- which seem to run in the $300 range but how long 'till that one needs R&R?
OR- buy new from England (Motobins or Motorworks) for about $500US plus shipping
Opinions? Other alternatives? Suggestions?
Thanks.

Hmmm - looks like you are kinda backed into a corner to me.
My $.02 - 1) $300 is way too much for used
2) Makes no sense to only replace one end
3) So it's down to new or rebuilt for $500 - I'd go rebuilt. By the time shipping charges get applied - rebuilt will be lots less.
Please post a picture of the work if you get the remanufactured one. _________________ Dave Norris KOG 248

John - you only have to do this once. Think about all the money you're saving by doing the tear down yourself.
I would go with Bruno as a first choice.
Second pick would be to have Henderson replace both of them. _________________ Jim

Gday John
Did this work last year, brought the new item from motobins. Decision based on their price versus local purchase (AUD600 against $1200 local) and no one I knew of to do a local rebuild. Motobins unit is ok but no grease fittings. In your place i'd go Bruno every time. If I could have gotten greasable joints i'd have cut two access holes in the tube and made greasing a normal service item. Thats my two bobs worth.
Good luck

Thanks folks- doing it right ONCE does make the most sense.
Especially when Bruno is going to send me back a driveshaft that is better than OEM.
Now to figure out the "how to ship it over the border without getting hit with some ridiculous customs fees", but I'll call them today to figure it out.
Thanks again. _________________ John & Cathy
