Hello - Long time listener, first time caller.

I've been lurking here for a while. I've got some tech questions I’ll be posting over the next few days /weeks, so I thought I’d introduce myself first.

My name is Doug, and I live in Somerville MA. I’ve been riding in the dirt since 1971 (Hodaka 100 B+) and on the street since 1981 (KZ650).

I bought my 1993 K1100LT in 2000 with 30,000 miles on it, currently at 99,800.. I’ve had it as far south as Mississippi, west to Chicago, east to Natashquan, and twice up the James Bay Road. My quest to break 100,000 miles and ride cross country (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=466462 ) ended on the side of the road in Unadilla NY with a broken rear universal joint. I’ve currently got the bike stripped from the license plate to the main seal preparing for a return “assault” on 100K and the west coast.

Mods include Parabellum windshield, PIAA lights, Ohlins shock, Highway pegs, passenger floorboards, Russell Saddle and topcase backrest, neoprene fork tube protectors. Currently having my bags Line-x’d ala Duck.

My other rides include a pretty clean CB350/four, a work-in-process CB550K, and a TR5T Triumph ( and I host a site called www.tr5tadventurer.net which is in great need of updating....)

Thanks for the help so far and bear with my silly questions over the next few months as I prepare for my "assault".

I'd like to know how you went with the no fuel for 375 klms!. Must have been tight or did you go a different wayor carry a small jerry can?

Maybe these are standard Km and you are thinking of Imperial Km!

We haven't used miles since 1966 and our gallon is 4.54 litres if we ever bother to use it. When are you guys going to catch up with the rest of the planet, but we digress....

Under the right saddlebag is a "tool tube" - they are actually tractor manual holders, 8 bucks or so at tractor supply. If you google tool tube tractor supply you will fine a bunch of posts referencing it.

Floorboards are some generic (dennis kirk?) highway peg style floorboards. I put them on with some blue locktite and they have not moved yet. Mrs Crash loves them.

We only rode the Trans Labrador as far as the Manic 5 dam (a few hundred miles or so). It is paved all the way. After that it turns to loose gravel. You'd need a pretty light load and different tires to take a k11 much further.

We carried 2 one gal gas cans in the saddlebag for the James Bay Road, and filled up after 125 miles or so. No problem making the 375 KM. Pretty awesome ride.

The GPS is a Garmin 2610. Pretty antiquated but bulletproof. The mount is one of the locking ones off Ebay (not the flimsy plastic ones, I didn't have much luck with that) on a RAM Mount on the handlebar. I tried mounting it on the fairing but it bounced around too much.

Agreed, 2610's are the ch!t. Did you have to cut the dash to get the mount to fit on the handlebar? And are you saying that the Garmin motorcycle mount wouldn't work on the handlebar mount. Gotta link to the one that will if that is the case? Inquiring minds need to know.

What do I put in the tool tube? Tools...I have a zip lok bag with a basic kit of tools in addition to the standard BMW kit.

I removed the radio control (and the radio ) and used that space to mount the GPS. I'll go take a pic and post it later.
